“I’m a bit tired tonight, not going out. Let’s meet up after I rest tomorrow.”
Patricia said, “Alright, then I’ll make you some pancakes and wontons.”
Josephine remembered the food Patricia had frozen for her in the fridge, which she hadn’t touched even once, and quickly said:
“No, don’t trouble yourself anymore. There’s a restaurant right here in Opal Heights, and it’s easy for me to eat with my card.”
Josephine walked into the restaurant and saw that Natalia and Zachery were there too.
Zachery sat in his chair, quietly listening to whatever Natalia was saying.
Josephine said to Patricia on the phone, “I’ll call you back later.”
She wasn’t wearing heels today, so her steps on the terrazzo floor were almost silent.
Before she got close, she heard Natalia say:
“Can’t I really invite Josie to my parent–child activity?”
Zachery replied gently, “She’s busy with work, and… Belinda will invite her, right?”
“But Belinda said in class that she wants Auntie Helena to go.”
Zachery was taken aback. “Natalia, sweetheart, isn’t it good enough to have Daddy with you?”
“It’s good, but, Daddy… you can’t replace Mommy!”
Natalia’s voice trembled uncontrollably, full of grievance and sadness. She lowered her head, her eyes brimming with tears.
A sudden, sharp pain stabbed through Josephine’s chest.
Natalia was Dr. Harrington’s daughter; rationally, she should care for her more.
“No wonder the weather forecast said it would rain. Turns out our little sun is crying again.”

Josephine’s voice arrived before she did.
Zachery and Natalia’s dull eyes suddenly lit up as they turned to look in unison.
Josephine walked toward them, carrying her bag.
Her hair swayed with each step, her almond–shaped eyes slightly upturned, red lips pressed together, and a faint smile on her face.
There was a calming, healing power about her.
“Josie.”
Natalia raised her arms and lunged at Josephine.
She had meant to hug Josie’s leg like she used to.
Unexpectedly, Josie slipped her hands under Natalia’s armpits and lifted her up directly.
Natalia instinctively wrapped her arms around Josephine’s neck. The tears in her eyes hadn’t even dried yet, but she couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
Zachery stood up, his expression visibly relaxed.
“What do you want to eat? I’ll go get it.”
Josephine asked, “Do you have any Marisbury dishes?”
“Yes, we have them every day.”
Zachery went to get the food.
Josephine pretended not to notice why Natalia was crying and asked her again.
When Natalia finally stammered out her invitation for Josephine to join the parent–child activity, Josephine agreed without hesitation.
“Of course, I just happen to be off work tomorrow.”
“Really? Josie, you can really come with me?”
Josephine nodded.
Natalia happily hugged Josephine and gave her a kiss.

Then she hugged Zachery, who had just returned with the food, and kissed him too.
She grinned from ear to ear, unable to stop smiling.
If Josephine attended the parent–child activity as Natalia’s guardian, she would inevitably attract criticism.
Just as Zachery was about to say something, Josephine cut him off, her tone assertive:
“I’ve already agreed. There’s no need for you to say anything more.”
Zachery paused for a moment, then lowered his head and let out a silent laugh.
The rising steam fogged up his glasses, hiding the gentle affection in his eyes…
After dinner, Natalia asked Josephine if they should wear matching outfits for the parent- child event.
Not wanting to disappoint Natalia, Josephine remembered a shop where she used to buy matching outfits and said, “Sure, let’s pick them online and have them delivered by local
courier.”
“Okay.” Natalia snuggled into Josephine’s arms.
Josephine picked her up and sat her on her own lap.
Zachery sat across from them, his gaze fixed solely on Josephine, unable to look away.
When he first met Josephine, he never imagined he would one day witness such a scene that
