Chapter65
Actually, Josephine’s family background wasn’t bad.
Her father was a minor leader at a state–owned enterprise, and her mother was a high school physics teacher.
When raising her, they always prioritized survival skills.
Grades that wouldn’t let her starve, martial arts that wouldn’t let her get beaten, swimming so she wouldn’t drown…
But horseback riding was something she knew nothing about.
Helena, on the other hand, grew up with Wilfred and was skilled in equestrianism.
So it was inevitable that Josephine would lose.
After Josephine finished, she took off her helmet and happened to see Helena happily jumping into Wilfred’s arms.
Wilfred and Belinda both hugged her and cheered…
Zachery came over and used his body to block Josephine’s view.
“Don’t look…”
Josephine smiled faintly. “It’s fine.”
Zachery twisted open a bottle of water and handed it to Josephine.
Then, out of nowhere, he produced a fan and began fanning Josephine.
Natalia imitated him and fanned Josephine as well.
The bit of frustration in Josephine’s heart quickly dissipated.
Then it was Zachery and Wilfred’s turn to compete.
Wilfred smiled, his tone provocative: “Dr. Maynard, are you still going to compete?”

If you only looked at the results, there really was no need to compete.
But Zachery just wanted to make things difficult for Wilfred.
Just imagine, if Belinda and Helena both won, but Wilfred lost… For someone as proud as Wilfred, how could he show his face?
The smile at the corner of Zachery’s lips deepened inexplicably, and he drawled, “After you, Mr. Hayden.”
Overestimating himself!
Wilfred gripped the reins, moved decisively, stepped into the stirrup, and leapt onto the horse.
Wilfred was riding a black horse.
After mounting, he gave the reins a sharp shake. The black horse immediately reared up, letting out a loud, piercing neigh.
The scene was utterly silent.
The men admired him, and the women watched with appreciation.
Zachery was riding a brown horse.
He stepped into the stirrup and mounted, sitting steadily on the horse’s back.
Hearing everyone praise Wilfred, he smiled calmly as well.
His hands gently stroked the horse’s mane, as if soothing an old friend.
Outside the arena, Josephine watched the two men secretly competing, her feelings truly complicated.
She had truly loved Wilfred, even more than herself. When he was ill, she had wished she could suffer in his place…
But now, when she looked at Wilfred, all she felt was ashes and loneliness.
As for Zachery, though she had only known him for a little over ten days, she felt an unprecedented sense of closeness and understanding.
The most obvious change was that in the days since meeting Zachery, she had only smoked

two cigarettes…
Helena led Belinda over. “Josephine, I’m really curious, who are you more worried about?”
Josephine crossed her arms over her chest, not even sparing Helena a glance. “Get lost, or I’ll start worrying about you first.”
Belinda snorted coldly. “All you do is snap at people.”
She tugged Helena along. “Mom, let’s go. Ignore her.”
Josephine felt as if she had been stabbed–an invisible wound, but excruciatingly painful.
This daughter, it would be better never to see her again.
Every meeting brought another heartbreak.
Helena bent down to hug Belinda. “Good girl, Mommy will take you to cheer for Daddy.”
Natalia, standing nearby, watched Belinda as she walked away.
She had never envied anyone before, but now she especially envied Belinda.
To have Josephine as her real mother.
But Belinda didn’t want that.
Belinda didn’t want it, but she did.
Natalia looked up at Josephine, and in a very soft, secret voice, she called, “Mom? Mom!”
But Josephine’s heart was entirely on the competition.
The competition began.
It would last only a single minute.
