“But we planned everything together,” Virginia’s voice is small, wounded. “The snorkeling, the luau, all of it.”
“I know, and I’m sorry. But this is my honeymoon with my wife. It wouldn’t be right to take you along, only to leave you on your own.”
Virginia’s eyes flash to me, burning with hatred so pure it makes me flinch. “Did she ask you to do this? Did she tell you to uninvite me?”
“Virginia, I’ll say it for the last time. Watch how you talk to my wife. She’s your sister–in–law. And no, she didn’t tell me anything. This is my decision.”
How did I never know Jasper had a poisonous tongue? No, wait. I did know. After all, he used to call me dramatic and ridiculous every time I spoke out about him abandoning me for
Virginia.
My heart clenches, painfully, and suddenly, I no longer find this scene entertaining.
“I don’t believe you.” Virginia stands abruptly, her coffee sloshing. “She’s been poisoning you against me from the beginning. She’s always been jealous of our friendship-”
“Virginia, stop.” Jasper’s voice is sharp now. “This isn’t about Scarlett. This is about me wanting to spend time alone with my wife. That’s normal.”
“Normal? Nothing is normal when she’s involved!” Virginia turns on me, all pretense of civility gone. “You can’t stand that he cares about me. You’ve never been able to stand it. That’s why you talked him out of taking me along.”
“That’s not true,” I manage.
Like, seriously?
The trip she’s getting worked up about is five years too late. I don’t even care about it anymore, so why would I care if Jasper takes her along or not.
Speaking of which, why is she even talking about it? After all, in Jasper’s memory, the tickets were booked yesterday. Changing the date is normal.
But Virginia should know it’s impossible, or at least as far as I know, it’s impossible to change the date of tickets five years too late.

So what is she creating a scene for?
“Isn’t it? Every time he helps me, every time he shows the slightest bit of concern for me, you get that look on your face. Like you want to scratch my eyes.out.”
“Virginia, that’s enough.” Jasper tries to get out of bed, but I put a hand on his shoulder, stopping him.
“No, let her talk.” I meet Virginia’s wild eyes. “Say what you need to say.”
“You think you’re so perfect. So understanding and patient. But I see through you, Scarlett. You’re just as insecure and petty as everyone else.”
The accusations wash over me. Part of me wants to scream back at her, to list every manipulation, every fake panic attack, every moment she deliberately came between Jasper and me.
But I can’t. Because Jasper doesn’t remember most of those events. It would serve no purpose. On the contrary, it might trigger Jasper instead.
“I’m sorry you feel that way,” I say quietly.
“Sorry? You’re sorry?” She laughs, high and brittle. “You’re not sorry. You’re thrilled. You finally got what you wanted him all to yourself.”

“Virginia, I think you should leave.” Jasper’s voice is cold now, the playful man from moments ago completely gone. “You’re upset and saying things you don’t mean.”
“I mean every word.” But she’s backing toward the door, tears streaming down her face. “She’s going to ruin you, Jasper. Just like she ruins everything she touches.”
She slams the door behind her, leaving a ringing silence.
Jasper’s hand finds mine, gripping tight. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what got into her.”
I do. She’s watching the man she loves choose me over her, again and again. Watching him push her away while pulling me closer.
And there’s nothing she can do about it.
“She’s just worried about you,” I hear myself say, even though it costs me.
“She’s out of line.” He tugs me closer until I’m sitting on the edge of his bed. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“Liar.” He brushes a strand of hair from my face. “Talk to me. What’s going on in that

beautiful head of yours?”
Everything. Nothing. I don’t know anymore.
“I’m just tired,” I admit.
“Then rest.” He shifts over, making room. “Lie down with me.”
“Jasper, I can’t-”
“Please.” His eyes are soft, pleading. “I sleep better when you’re close.”

It’s a bad idea. A terrible idea. But I’m so exhausted, and he’s looking at me so expectantly, I can’t find the heart to refuse him.
I kick off my shoes and carefully lie down beside him, mindful of his IV line. He immediately wraps an arm around me, pulling me against his chest.
“This is better,” he murmurs into my neck. “Much better.”
I close my eyes, breathing in his familiar scent. It’s been so long since I last slept this close to him, that my whole body tingles from the proximity. I try to focus on my breathing, on my heartbeat, on anything to get my mind off the feel of his arm wrapped around my waist, his chest pressed firm against my back, his warm breath fanning the nape of my neck.
“Letty?”
“Hmm?”
