Chapter 160

(Virginia’s POV)

Virginia. I thought you went home.Jasper’s face is tight, closed off. The open frankness I’d once admired is gone, replaced by suspicion and wariness.

I don’t respond. Just stare at them, my heart pounding in my ears.

How much did you hear?Dorian asks, his voice calm, careless even.

Hear what?I sweep a confused glance from him to Jasper. Is there something I’m not supposed to know?

We were discussing confidential business matters.

I nod, and set the coffee carrier on the table by the door. Grabbing the doorknob, I smile, saying, go on and continue then. I won’t disturb you,and stride out.

The second the door closes behind me, my composure crumbles.

I can’t breathe.

Extreme terror grips me, sending tremors shaking through my whole being. I press my hands against my thighs, but it doesn’t help. The shaking won’t stop.

Their words keep replaying in my head, over and over, like a broken record that won’t stop

spinning.

We’ll set a trap for Morgan. See if we can rattle her into making a mistake.

We’ll take down Morgan. Together.

JasperJasper remembers everything!

He remembers! He’s been lying to me, to Blair, to James, even to Scarlett.

And Dorian? He’s supposed to be Scarlett’s fiance. He’s supposed to love her. And yet

He’s helping Jasper to lie to Scarlett.

Dorian knows Jasper remembers everything and he’s supporting Jasper to lie to Scarlett, to keep playing house with her.

Is he sick? Is he insane? How could he support his love rival to lie to his fiance? Doesn’t his stomach churn to see them act all loveydovey in his face?

Yes, he must be sick. Such generosity isn’t normal, even in my standards.

I stumble down the hospital corridor, barely seeing where I’m going. A nurse calls out something, but I don’t stop.

Morgan’s name keeps echoing in my skull.

They know. They know she has a hand in this. And if they find out the truthif they discover my involvement

No. No, no, no. I won’t let that happen.

I need to get to her.

I need to find her, warn her about Jasper and Dorian’s plan before it’s too late.

My vision blurs as I push through the exit doors, the cold air hitting my face like a slap. The parking garage is nearly empty. My car is somewhere on the third level, but my legs feel like they might give out before I reach it.

What have I done?

The question sits heavy in my chest, pressing down until I can barely breathe.

I wanted Scarlett gone. Wanted her out of my life, out of Jasper’s life. I was so tired of watching her get everythingthe parents who should’ve been mine, the man I loved, the perfect little family.

But murder?

I lean against a concrete pillar, bile rising in my throat.

I don’t know how it got this far. The first time, I just wanted Morgan to scare her. Maybe rough her up a little. Make her think twice about returning to Avalon.

But Morgan took it too far. Way too far. And bribed the doctor to kill both her and her baby.

Then there was the accident.

Jasper nearly lost his life because of it.

And now he and Dorian are investigating. They’re going to find the connection. They’re going to trace it back to Morgan, and Morgan’s going to give me up the second she feels threatened.

My hands fumble for my phone. Morgan’s number is still in my recent calls from two days ago. I hit dial before I can secondguess myself.

It rings once. Twice.

Virginia. Her voice is cool, collected. Like always. Didn’t I tell you not to contact me anytime soon?

We need to meet. Now.

I’m busy-

Now, Morgan. This can’t wait.

A pause. Then, Fine. The usual place. Twenty minutes.

She hangs up.

I stand there for a moment, phone clutched in my hand, trying to calm the panic crawling up my throat.

Twenty minutes. I have twenty minutes to figure out how I’m going to convince her to leave the city.

The coffee shop is nearly empty when I arrive. Just a couple of students hunched over laptops and an elderly man reading a newspaper in the corner.

Morgan sits at our usual table by the window, a latte in front of her. She looks completely calm. Like a person without any care or worries in the world.

You’re late,” she says as I slide into the chair across from her.

Traffic. The lie comes automatically. We have a problem.

I gathered that from your panicked phone call. She takes a sip of her latte, her green eyes studying me over the rim. What happened?

Jasper knows.

Knows what?

About the accident. He knows it’s planned.

I anticipated he would. Any one with a brain can figure that out.

She anticipated it? What does she mean she anticipated it? If she expected Jasper to realize this, then why did she go with it? Why didn’t she warn me?

If I had known he’d discover about Morgan’s involvement, I would have come up with a different plan to get rid of Scarlett.

Why risk getting all my secrets uncovered if her plan was going to be a flop. Huh! And she calls me useless.

I lean forward, lowering my voice. They have your name, Morgan. They’re investigating you.

They can investigate all they want. They won’t get anything. She sneers.

But I only give her a mocking look. You underestimate othersintelligence, and overestimate yourself. They hired private investigators long before the accident, Morgan. They know about the Shell Company. As we speak right now, they’re already digging into the SUV you rented.

Now that, that gets her attention.

Morgan sets down her cup, her jaw tight. How much time do we have?
