“No.” I shake my head, backing away from the table. “No, absolutely not. That’s insane.”
“It’s the only option. As long as she’s alive, she’s a threat to you.”
“I’m not killing her. Not when Jasper is investigating this.”
“You don’t have to. I will.” Morgan stands, dropping a few bills on the table. “But I need your help.”
Now the smart thing to do would be to say no, to turn her down and walk away. To call Jasper, and tell him everything. Come clean and face whatever consequences are waiting.
But then, what would be the point in that?
I’m not a saint. I don’t care about Scarlett Stone’s life and death. In fact, I would be more delighted to assist in her death.
But that was before, when I had yet to discover Jasper is faking memory loss to protect her. Before I overheard he and Dorian joined hands, that they are working together to catch the ones after Scarlett’s life.
Alone, they were already a headache to deal with. And now that they’ve joined hands, it will only get more difficult to get rid of Scarlett.
Instead of waiting for death, why not take the initiative? If I strike first, if I remove Scarlett from the equation before they get Morgan…even if I end up getting caught, it would be worth
Still, I don’t show my thoughts on my face.
As Morgan taught me, never trust anyone but yourself.
“What’s the plan?” The words come out hollow, defeated. Just the way I want.
Morgan’s smile widens. “There’s a charity gala next week. One of those fancy fundraisers Scarlett always attends. She’ll be there, surrounded by people, feeling safe.”
“And?”
“And accidents happen at crowded events. A fall down the stairs. A car malfunction in the parking garage. So many possibilities.”

I stare at her, horror crawling up my spine. “Your plan is to kill her in public?”

“No, no, no.” She releases my shoulder, wiggling her finger. “My plan is to kidnap her in public. And you’re going to help me make sure she’s in the right place at the right time.”
Morgan stands and heads for the door, then pauses. “Oh, and Virginia?”
I turn, “Yes?”
“Make sure you don’t mess up this time.’
Then she’s gone, leaving me alone at the table with the weight of what’s about to happen crushing down on me.
That night, sleep deludes me.
Every time I close my eyes, I see Scarlett’s face. The way she looked at me at the Christmas outing when she thought I was leaving for Europe.
There was something in her expression–not quite forgiveness, but maybe understanding, that shook my heart for a second.
She told me to love myself. To not make Jasper the center of my world, which is easier said
than done.
Yet I can’t help but wonder. If she was in my place, if she had been the one who grew up in an orphanage without the love of parents, and the care of loved ones…if Jasper had been the only light in her life…would she have still said those words just as easily?
I roll over in bed, staring at the ceiling. My phone sits on the nightstand, Morgan’s last text still glowing in my mind.
Friday. The gala. Don’t forget.
My chest tightens. The panic attack starts slow, creeping in like fog. I sit up, trying to breathe through it, but it’s not working.
I reach for my medication, hands shaking so badly I almost drop the bottle. Two pills. I swallow them dry, waiting for the chemical calm to kick in.
It doesn’t.
Because pills can’t fix what I’ve become.
I grab my phone, scrolling through old photos. There’s one from two years ago–me, Jasper, Blair, and James at a family dinner. I’m smiling, but even then, I can see it in my eyes. The hunger. The desperation.

The need to belong somewhere, to someone.

Jasper’s looking at his phone in the picture. Probably reading updates on his search for Scarlett. Even then, even when she was gone, he couldn’t stop thinking about her.
I was never going to win, was I?
A new text pops up. Morgan.
Change of plans. Meet me tomorrow night. Same place. 8pm.
My stomach drops. Tomorrow? That’s too soon.
I type back: Why? What happened?
Three dots appear, then disappear. Then appear again.
Just be there. And Virginia? Don’t bring anyone. This conversation is just between us.
The message feels like a threat wrapped in politeness.
I set the phone down, my hands trembling.
Change in plans? It’s never a good sign when Morgan makes a change in plan. Either she encountered difficulty…or things are about to get dangerous.
Much, much dangerous.
It is exactly what I need to ensure Scarlett is gone, and gone for good, without leaving a
trace.
(Morgan’s POV)
Virginia’s going to c***k. I can feel it.
The fool.
She thinks with her heart instead of her head, and that makes her dangerous. Unpredictable.
People like that always fold under pressure.
