Julian was just about to tear open the envelope when the office phone rang.
He set the envelope aside and picked up the receiver. "This is Julian."
"Mr. Nicholson, Yves Prescott put in his application this afternoon, right after taking a look at that plot of land this morning!" Clayton's voice crackled through the line, urgent and agitated.
"What?" Julian's heart jolted.
The letter he'd been about to open was forgotten, left on the edge of his desk.
Across from him, Gideon noticed Julian's suddenly tense expression and wisely kept quiet.
On the phone, Clayton vented, "That Yves Prescott is impossible to predict—never plays by the rules! He's got no sense of boundaries or decency. And it's not like he even has a proper senior living project lined up, not like you and I do. He's just doing this because of that woman he keeps around for his own amusement! Is he seriously trying to mess with us over a piece of land? What, is he planning to roll around with Winona on it and have a romp in the dirt?"
Julian was struck speechless.
His mind went blank, and his knuckles whitened as he gripped the receiver.
Gideon watched Mr. Nicholson anxiously.
"Mr. Nicholson? Sir?" he ventured quietly, "If you keep squeezing that hard, you're going to break the phone."
Julian snapped out of it.
Clayton was still ranting, "And Winona—she's no better than a streetwalker! She tried to seduce you a few times and when you wouldn't bite, she turned straight to Yves Prescott, coaxing him to bid against us. She's just using him to get back at you, plain as day. All because you ignored her? Because Miss Shepherd is a hundred times the woman she'll ever be? Now she's resorting to this kind of spiteful revenge! She's obsessed with Felicity Shepherd—so jealous she's lost her mind!"
Using Yves Prescott to get at him.
Driven mad by jealousy over Felicity.
Clayton's words hit Julian like a slap. Was Winona really so bent on revenge for being shut out of the Nicholson family? Was she punishing him for divorcing her? Would she really go so far as to ignore her own daughter just to get back at him?
Who else but Winona would block her own child's number, leaving a little girl sobbing for her mother, who wouldn't even pick up the phone?
Cold. Ruthless.
Colder, even, than someone abandoning a stray cat.
