Winona was baffled. In a soft, almost wistful voice, she asked, "Why?"
"Because I can see it—the retirement project is your dream, your life's work. I know you never started this for the money. Your designs and vision are impressive enough to win over Zachary—so why wouldn't I be convinced too?" Yves Prescott's voice was low and gravelly, yet it carried an undeniable magnetism.
Somehow, Winona caught a hint of melancholy in Yves's tone.
How could a man like Yves, always so confident and commanding, sound so desolate?
She couldn't figure it out.
But then Yves leaned closer and said quietly, "In a bit, I'll help you find out just how much you really matter to Julian."
"Don't bother," Winona replied bleakly. "I don't matter to him at all. If you try, I'll just end up humiliating myself."
"Once we get the property, I'll tell him I sold you off—for a great price. I want to see how he reacts."
Winona was silent.
She didn't try to stop Yves because she truly believed Julian wouldn't even blink if Yves said that. Julian had always treated her like she was invisible, like a stranger passing by. Why would he care who she ended up with? Maybe he'd even say, "The farther away she goes, the better."
But to her astonishment, after Yves secured the land and made his announcement, Julian's response was nothing like she'd expected.
Julian punched Yves right then and there.
Winona was stunned.
She never imagined Julian would react so violently.
But she didn't have time to dwell on it. Yves had taken a punch for her—and he'd gone above and beyond for her that day. She had to defend him.
She shielded Yves instinctively, as if protecting her own husband, while the look she gave Julian was cold, almost venomous. "The property was up for public bidding! You lost because you didn't offer enough—you have no right to hit anyone! I want you to apologize to Yves. Right now. Apologize!"
