The Billionaire Ex-Wife and the Beggar He Became novel Chapter 149

Julian was left speechless by Winona's words, frozen for a long moment. Yet the more she pushed him away, the more he felt the urge to talk to her, to settle things once and for all.

He spoke, voice calm but dangerously cold. "You may have Yves Prescott's protection now, but how can you be so sure which of us would come out on top—him or me?"

The threat hung in the air, unmistakable. Winona was caught off guard, her eyes dropping as she let out a soft, defeated laugh.

"What is it you want to talk about, Mr. Nicholson? Where? The conference room we just left, or here in the hallway? Fine, pick a place. Let's talk."

Seeing her relent, Julian let out a silent breath of relief. He gathered his daughter Tiana in his arms and walked over to Sue, who was wheeling her suitcase behind her, ready to leave for her new job.

"Sue…" he called, using her first name.

To be fair, Mr. Nicholson had always treated the household staff well. Their pay was generous, their uniforms and meals provided, and he was never harsh about their duties. So when Julian spoke to her so directly, Sue was taken aback, flustered by his attention.

"Sir, if you need anything, just let me know. Even though I've resigned, I'll do whatever I can to help before I go."

Julian nodded, his voice stripped of the usual authority, replaced by the quiet urgency of a father. "I know you haven't been happy working for the Nicholson family. I won't force you to stay. But could you, for Tiana's sake—since she's just lost her mother—stay a little longer? Name your salary. Five thousand, ten thousand a month—it doesn't matter. Whatever you ask."

Tiana, still in his arms, burst into tears and lunged for Sue. "Ms. Murphy, please don't go! Please…"

She was a bright little girl—too clever for her own good. She understood that Sue's resignation was because of her mother. Sue had always thought Winona was treated unfairly in this house. Sue had sided with her mother, and her mother liked Sue as well.

Now that her mother was gone, Tiana thought if she could at least keep Sue here, maybe Sue could convince her mom to come back someday.
