Winona, who had always kept her composure, finally lost it—she slammed her hand on the table and shot to her feet, unable to contain her anger at Julian any longer.
Her smile was sharp, her words edged with bitter irony. "Six years, Julian. In all that time, you've barely spoken a word to me. We might have shared a bed, but we lived in different worlds. You always acted like if you so much as spoke two sentences to me, I'd cling to you like a piece of gum on your shoe. And now, now you want to talk about compensation? Just so I won't take you to court?"
She let out a short, hollow laugh. "I sue you, and suddenly you're embarrassed—your precious reputation's on the line! Just this morning, you threatened me yourself. If I took a single cent from the Nicholsons, you said you'd haul me into court and divorce me, that you'd make sure I paid for it. Tell me—did you ever, even for a second, think about letting me go? Did you? Answer me, Julian, did you ever once consider letting me go?"
Her voice was raw, trembling with pain and fury. "Don't pretend you did. You wouldn't even give me a chance to explain myself. The first thing you did was push me straight toward the courtroom—wasn't that it?"
Julian's reply was barely a whisper. "No… That's not—"
But the words stuck in his throat. He had nothing. No defense, no excuse.
And really, what could he say?
The moment Felicity accused Winona of taking money from the family, Julian hadn't even asked her for her side of the story. He'd simply made up his mind, ready to drag her into court. And now, he wanted to talk about negotiation? It was laughable.
She was his lawful wife. Even if she had taken every penny the Nicholsons had, it would have been her right. Since when did that merit a lawsuit?
Julian, what on earth was wrong with you?
And as if that weren't enough, in all her years with the family, Winona had never taken a single dollar from them. How did she even survive all these years?
Julian straightened his shoulders, his voice stiff and formal after a long silence. "I am, after all, Julian Nicholson. I would never see my wife go without. Even if we're divorced, I wouldn't let my ex-wife suffer."
He said it as though he'd never done her any wrong.
Winona's laugh was strangled, tears threatening to spill over. "Not let me suffer? What a joke."
