She glanced at Wesley, who hadn't been home in nearly two weeks, and asked, "Where did you hear those rumors?"
"Mia." Wesley had been away on business for over a week, and the first place he went after returning was Winona's design studio.
He'd planned to tell her about meeting several investors out of town and finding a few promising plots of land. But as soon as he walked into the studio, he overheard Mia's excited voice on the phone.
"Hah! Our dear Win is amazing—she's going to marry Yves Prescott, can you believe it? Do you even know who Yves Prescott is? He's only the richest man in Greenwood City! Soon enough, Win will be the city's most influential woman!"
Wesley had no idea who Mia was bragging to, but hearing her only filled him with worry.
He turned to Winona, his expression grave. "Nona, everyone in Greenwood's upper circles thinks Yves Prescott is dangerous. And from what I've heard, he's already engaged to Miss Murphy from Port City. The Murphy family has… well, let's just say a few skeletons in their closet. So—"
He hesitated, concern weighing on his words. "Nona, you still haven't managed to break free from Julian. His family treats you like a servant, constantly using you and never giving you any respect. I can't stand to watch you escape one nightmare only to walk straight into another."
"I know, Wesley." Winona looked at him with gratitude.
She offered a confident smile. "I've heard the rumors about Yves Prescott and Miss Murphy. Felicity mentioned it to me, so I asked Yves myself. He told me he's not engaged to her or anyone else from the Murphy family—it's just gossip."
"But even if he were, I wouldn't marry Yves Prescott. I've got no plans to remarry in this life. All I want is a quiet life with my grandmother and my son. That's enough for me."
"As for now, there's nothing between me and Yves except a business arrangement."
Her voice turned bleak but resolute. "Julian pushed me into a corner. He had every intention of sending me to prison if he found out I was filing for divorce. When he discovered my plans, he actually had the nerve to ask if it was really necessary to go to court. Either way, he was going to destroy me. Without Yves Prescott's help, I'd be left with nothing—no way out."
