The Billionaire Ex-Wife and the Beggar He Became novel Chapter 189

Julian found himself at a loss for words in the face of Winona's question.

But even if he couldn't answer her, he could hear the desperation in her voice—the way it sounded hollow and raw told him just how cornered she must have felt, to seek protection from Yves Prescott of all people.

All these years, he'd treated her with nothing but cold indifference, never once stopping to consider just how difficult her circumstances might have become.

"If you can't answer, Mr. Nicholson, allow me," Winona said, her tone cutting and bitter.

"In your eyes, I was never meant to survive. I was nothing but an obstacle to Felicity—a cancer to be cut out, a villain in someone else's story. Felicity was always your heroine. So you never cared about my feelings. Or maybe you just knew I didn't have the power to fight back, so you kept pushing me down."

She drew a shaky breath and pressed on, "But Mr. Nicholson, Felicity might be the heroine in your story, but she's not in mine! You can call me a blight and try every way you can to erase me, you can keep on tormenting me, but I will do whatever it takes to stay alive! I have a right to live, don't I?"

"Yes. You have that right," Julian replied at last.

He could see how shaken she was today, how all her usual calm had vanished.

If he kept ignoring her the way he always had—remaining silent, pretending she didn't exist—he worried she might just snap entirely.

Her patience had finally run out.

Why was she so upset, so suddenly? Was it just because he hit Yves Prescott?

Julian didn't know, but an odd emptiness settled in his chest. Looking into Winona's eyes, he saw only determination, disgust, and hatred—any trace of love she'd once had for him was gone.

There was a time she loved him so much.

She'd given everything for him, even for his family and his nephew Victor, never holding anything back. When had that unconditional love faded away, vanished without a trace?

He couldn't say.

He'd never even noticed it slipping away.

"If I have the right to live, then I have the right to go wherever I choose. So, Mr. Nicholson, why did you attack Yves Prescott? I want a real answer!"

He'd never imagined Winona could push him to this point.
