Frank and his wife had chosen never to have children. They'd spent a lifetime together, just the two of them, and their bond ran deep.
On her deathbed, his wife had grasped his hand, her voice urgent even as it faded: "Darling, all my life I missed my homeland, but everyone I loved there betrayed me. Only Shepherd—who wasn't even related to me—cared for me with such devotion. Of all the girls I've met, she's the kindest. You must look after her. She's had such a hard life."
Frank never forgot those words. Shepherd had truly been dealt a rough hand in life, yet through sheer determination she'd carved out a bright future for herself. Now, that woman called Winona seemed determined to ruin her happiness. The injustice of it all made Frank's blood boil.
He patted Felicity gently on the back, trying to comfort her. "Don't worry, Shepherd. I'll help you. I promise I'll handle that woman and make sure she never troubles you again."
"Mr. Frank, you're so good to me." Felicity blinked back tears but managed a grateful smile.
"You're not yourself today. It's no good for you to stay at the site when you're feeling like this. Go home and rest! A woman needs her beauty sleep—especially when you want to look your best for your man, right? Confidence and a smile, Shepherd. Always."
Felicity nodded, drying her eyes. "I understand, Mr. Frank. I'll go home and get some rest. I have to visit a patient this afternoon, so I need to be at my best."
"That's my girl."
With that, Felicity grabbed her bag and left the construction site.
Frank pulled out his phone and dialed an international number. The other workers nearby couldn't catch what he was saying, but it was clear from his tone that he was determined.
"The sooner, the better," he insisted, his voice low and urgent. "The faster you get here, the cleaner this will be. My niece shouldn't have to endure another day of this nonsense."
