Julian said nothing.
He'd thought about this before.
He didn't mind the idea of letting Winona stay at the house—she was, after all, quite the expert at laundry and cooking.
But of course, he'd have to talk it over with Felicity first.
Even if Felly agreed, it would only work if Winona didn't cause any trouble.
"Can we, Dad?" Tiana pleaded with big eyes, tugging at his sleeve.
"I'll see what I can do," Julian replied. "But first—bath time and then straight to bed, okay?"
"Okay!" Tiana finally relented, scampering off to get ready for her shower.
Monday morning.
As soon as Julian stepped into the office, the legal department caught up with him, divorce papers in hand.
"Mr. Nicholson, this is the most comprehensive agreement. It guarantees the other party walks away with nothing," the attorney announced, both hands respectfully offering the document.
Julian nodded. "Good."
There was no affection left between him and Winona. He certainly wasn't about to share any assets with her.
Once the attorney left, Julian picked up the phone and dialed Yates, the family's longtime butler.
Yates answered almost immediately. "Yes, sir?"
"Yates, what's the standard pay for housekeepers at the Nicholson estate these days?"
"We've got four levels based on how long they've been here, sir," Yates explained. "Over twenty years - they get a pension after retiring. Over ten - fifteen hundred a month, plus room, board, and clothes. Five years - a thousand a month with uniform. New ones start at six hundred, with a six-month trial period."
"Okay, well... draft a contract at six hundred a month for a new hire. The candidate's name is Winona."
There was a long pause.
Winona? Julian's wife?
All these years, she'd never taken even a cent in living expenses from the family. And now she was being hired as household staff? It was better than nothing, he supposed. At least a low-level housekeeper earned a wage.
Yet Yates felt a pang of sorrow he couldn't quite explain.
"Of course, sir. I'll prepare it right away," Yates replied, his voice catching just slightly.
Julian didn't notice.
