Tiana's outburst brought the entire banquet hall to a standstill—you could've heard a pin drop.
Every eye in the room fixed on her.
Anger and wounded pride flashed across her face, but she stubbornly held back her tears. Not a single drop fell.
The truth was, deep down, Tiana was a lot like her mother, Winona. The more hurt she felt, the more fiercely she refused to cry in front of others.
She watched as Zane, holding the hand of a little girl, rushed into Winona's arms.
Fury bubbled up inside Tiana until she thought she might explode.
Winona was her mother.
Hers.
A mother was supposed to love only her child—her, not anyone else.
She wouldn't allow it.
But she'd never stoop to apologize to her mother, either.
After all, she hadn't done anything wrong.
It was her mother who'd moved out first; her mother who, knowing full well both she and her father liked Miss Felly, still went out of her way to make things difficult for her. Tiana had already forgiven her mother, even agreed to let her come back and work for the family as a housekeeper—but Winona refused.
Her mother really was impossible.
Not just impossible—she was now hugging someone else's child in front of everyone!
The more Tiana thought about it, the angrier she became.
She marched up to Winona, chin held high, voice sharp and cold. "Let me make this clear: you're not even our housekeeper anymore. Not! Even! That!"
With that, the little girl spun on her heel and stormed out.
No one saw the tears that had welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over. She forced them back, refusing to let herself cry.
She slipped back into her seat between Julian and Felicity, head held high.
Felicity caught every flicker of emotion on Tiana's face.
She was an adult—she knew exactly why Tiana had reacted so strongly.
Tiana was jealous. Jealous of the little girl in Winona's arms.
Deep down, Tiana still loved her mother. She still longed for her mother's affection.
