Teague finally lost his temper and snapped at Winona. "Why are you still hanging around Greenwood City instead of going back to your little mountain town?"
Winona shot back, "What does it matter to you where I live? Or is Greenwood City now the private property of the Shepherd family?"
"Where you live doesn't matter to me! But you keep making Felicity's life miserable—now that is my business!"
Teague's voice grew sharper. "You're no better than an uneducated woman, yet you show up at Julian and Felicity's dinner party, poking your nose into Felicity's business deals. Do you even know what a project is?"
Winona's calm expression twisted into a cold, mocking smile. "Oh? So you do know about Felicity's project?"
"She's my daughter—of course I know!" Teague snapped.
He paused, then jabbed his finger at Winona again. "Felicity is working on a major development! What do you know about that? You try to sabotage her, do you think Julian is just going to stand by and let it happen? Why don't you just go back to your small town, find some decent guy, and get married? Haven't I left you enough with the dowry money I left your parents—wasn't that enough for you? But no, you insist on staying here in Greenwood City, ruining things between Felicity and Julian!"
"You left me a dowry?" For the first time in ten years, Winona heard about this.
"It was compensation for your birth parents raising Felicity for sixteen years! And yes, it was also your dowry," Henrietta chimed in coldly.
Suddenly, Winona burst out laughing—loud, wild, and unrestrained.
At last, she understood why her real parents never let her into their home. It all made sense now—they'd already accepted that ten grand from the Shepherds. If they acknowledged her, wouldn't that money go straight to her?
What a twisted, ridiculous hand she'd been dealt in life.
For a moment, Winona felt dazed. Was she actually some villain in a trashy romance novel? The kind who's doomed from the very start—hunted down by every so-called hero and heroine, by the main character's admirers, best friends, and even her entire family?
If that was the case, Winona wanted to curse the author of this story: No one's ever going to read your book, you talentless hack!
