Days later...
"Lola, mountains of paper are stacking up on your desk, and they won’t sign themselves." Amala let out a deep breath as she added another handful of papers to the mountain. "If you miss them that much, then why not go home?"
Lola, who had been sulking at her desk, looked up at her. Her lips curved down deeply, her eyes welling up with tears.
"I feel homesick," she muttered, her voice dramatically shaky. "Amala, is it normal for me to wish they were a little dumb? Those kids are too sharp, and I’m sure they would notice something is off if they see me. They sometimes examine me, you know? Telling me I’m a bit of a klutz."
Another deep breath escaped Lola as she thought of her woes. The first day of being separated from the twins, she was fine with it. However, on the second day, she started missing them — especially when she heard their voices while talking to Atlas.
On the third day, they called her and talked with her. But that only made her realize that it was different when she could still see them, help them shower, feed them, and put them to bed. She couldn’t even video call them because of her lips. Although her injuries had healed, Atlas wouldn’t let her see them.
"Is he punishing me?" she asked Amala. "Amala, is this the time I start what people call a lover’s quarrel?"
Standing near the desk, Amala shook her head. "He’s just being careful. After what happened, I would be too. His lover had to go through such a thing, and the least the two of you could do is to avoid involving the children."
"I know that..." Lola sighed again, dropping her forehead on top of her arm. "But I miss them. I’m healed! I can make an excuse about my lips, but he wouldn’t let me."
She sulked and lamented again, rendering Amala helpless. The latter believed that Atlas was just making the right call. Lola, after all, was a complicated person. Little did the two know, Atlas knew Lola could see the children in her current state. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
The reason he was sticking to this excuse? Simple. He could have had Lola not just in the evening. And they could do it anywhere too.
"If you get yourself together, remember the bidding. We already sent the proper documents for it," Amala changed the topic, knowing this situation was hopeless. "On top of that, considering the recent incident at your previous place, you have to be very careful."
Lola peeked up at her. "I’ll be fine, Amala. Told you Atlas planted some shadow guards on me. So, that’s not going to happen again."
"I know, but I need you to be careful still," Amala stressed. "Things are a little rocky, and until we find out who was the person behind the attack, we can’t lower our guard."
Lola and Amala stared at each other until the former rested her head on the desk again.
"I know," Lola whispered, head turned to the side. She waved Amala off without looking. "No one’s lowering their guard anymore. The next time this ever happens, I will gear up and wipe them all out myself."
Amala let out a shallow breath, about to go when she thought of something. Taking a small candy from her blazer, she placed it near Lola’s face and walked away. Lola peeked at it and took the candy.
Lola pursed her lips and popped the candy into her mouth. "I thought this candy was phased out," she mumbled, thinking of it as her favorite when she was a child. Snapping her eyes at the shut door, she huffed and shook her head.
"Time to work!"
But as she turned to the other side of the desk, her entire body froze in place. Before her was a mountain of papers that was almost the same height as she was while sitting. When her eyes fell on the side of the desk, she clasped her chest at the little hills of papers there.
