"Meg?"
Lola knitted her brows, looking at Aileen in confusion. "I think I just heard that," she hummed, trying to remember where she had heard it. Then it struck her.
"Oh!" Lola’s mouth formed an O-shape.
Aileen chuckled. "I sent you a package. I did some research when I planned my show here. This place holds a special place in my heart, and I wanted to find you. Do you know how much I missed you?"
"I know, but I’m really glad that you’re fine," Lola said, smiling at her. "Fashion designing, huh? I never thought you’d end up becoming so popular."
Aileen opened her mouth but ended up smiling instead. Fashion design wasn’t really in her original plans. Yet as she thought about her future, a beautiful memory crossed her mind.
It was a memory of her and Lola as children. Lola often gave her dresses—not just used ones, but new ones. She would even beg Loren to buy two identical dresses for her and Aileen, though Lola’s reasoning was just to confuse everyone.
It was a simple memory, but it was what had nudged Aileen toward fashion design.
"I sent you a personal invitation to my show," Aileen said with a smile. "You’ll come, right?"
"How could I miss that?" Lola quipped. "I’m not usually into these things, but I would never miss this for the world!"
"Great!" Aileen clasped her hands together. "I’d love to introduce you to some of my colleagues. They know you, after all."
"Me?"
She nodded vigorously. "I’ve always talked about you. They thought you were just an imaginary friend because how could I call you my muse after all these years if I hadn’t seen you? How would I know what you look like, whether you gained or lost weight, or if you’re still as pretty as I remember?"
"I kept telling them the foundation is pretty, so there’s that," she grinned until she was squinting. "And I was right."
Lola chuckled at Aileen’s logic. It was a little silly, but also flattering. Even though fashion wasn’t her thing—considering her current style choices—she was touched that Aileen had never forgotten her.
Her eyes softened as she reached out and held Aileen’s hand. Aileen smiled back, nodding reassuringly.
"It’s really good to see you, Aileen," Lola said sincerely. "Who would’ve thought a simple grocery run would lead to this reunion?"
"I know, right?" Aileen’s eyes reddened slightly. "Good thing I did my groceries after surviving on instant foods and deliveries."
For some reason, they both glanced at their brown grocery bags. Seeing Aileen’s bags full of greens and Lola’s full of snacks, Lola’s face twitched.
"You’ve been surviving on just instant foods?" Lola asked. "Those greens tell me otherwise."
"I had to change my diet before the show. I can’t afford to get sick," Aileen chuckled. "But that’s a lot of snacks, Lola. You should add some greens to your list. If Mom heard this, she’d give you an earful."
Lola laughed, thinking about her old nanny, who had been like a mother to her. When Loren was still active in business, it was Aileen’s mother who had always been there for her.
"They’re not mine," Lola defended, noticing Aileen raise her brows. "These snacks..."
She trailed off for a moment, then smiled sincerely. "They’re for my kids."
SLAM!
Aileen slammed the table, jaw dropping. "You’re married?"
"Not married—"
"A divorcee?"
"No —"
