The Bride of Endless Deaths novel Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Ever since our wedding, I had promoted Julian Blake to deputy director of the Metropolitan Medical Center. All the big and small responsibilities were handed over to him, while I stayed home to focus on my health

and prepare for pregnancy.

When he saw the icy look on my face, Julian hurried forward and caught my hand.

“Evelyn, don’t get the wrong idea. I only came here to warn her not to pester me anymore.”

Julian always told me how much he despised Sierra Prescott’s endless clinginess, how he loathed the way his Arcane Pact forced their every encounter. Even after we married, he never stopped complaining about how irritating she was.

But looking back now, I realized his eyes always softened whenever he mentioned her. I could no longer fool

myself.

I said nothing, only pulling my hand free.

‘From inside the hospital room came Sierra’s startled cry:

“Julian, I twisted my ankle—it hurts!”

Julian hesitated, glancing at me. “Evelyn, she’s still my patient.”

I didn’t stop him. I just watched as he rushed back inside, his urgency betraying him. His concern for her was so painfully obvious-and how pathetic I was, blinded by my delusional love, never seeing it until now.

A bitter smile tugged at my lips as I turned away and walked to the director’s office.

I summoned my assistant, Mark Davis, and handed him files on dozens of viruses.

Mark’s eyes widened. “You’re… stepping down?”

I gave him a faint smile but said nothing.

“After I’m gone, pass these to the research institute. They’ll continue my work.”

Mark gave a respectful nod, admiration in his eyes.

Ten years ago, a virus had ravaged this world.

As the director of the National Institute of Biomedical Research in the 21st century, I had been bound by my Arcane Pact and sent here. My mission was to save this broken Contracted Realm.

The day the antiviral drug was released, I could have left.

But Julian had caught my hand and confessed the truth about his Arcane Pact. He told me he was meant to pursue Sierra, yet from the moment he saw me, he had fallen in love.

For me, he was willing to defy his Arcane Pact, accept its punishment, and even burn through all of his Pact’s Power just to remain in this world by my side forever.

Lost in thought, I was jolted back when the office door slammed open. Julian stormed in, fury written across

his face.

“Evelyn, why did you have Sierra’s medication stopped?”

I gestured for Mark to leave, then raised an eyebrow. “And your proof?”

“Who else could it be?” Julian raked a hand through his hair in frustration. “Evelyn, I know you’re jealous that I’ve been taking care of Sierra, but I’ve told you countless times-she’s my Quest Objective. I have to

look after her.”

“She has a heart condition. Do you really need to make such a scene over this?”

Seeing Julian so enraged felt like staring at a stranger. Swallowing the bitter ache in my chest, I met his gaze. “So what? Are you planning to kill me for Sierra’s sake?”

Tears welled up before I could stop them, the weight of my grievances too heavy to contain.

Julian froze at the sight of my tears. “Of course not! I just… I just want you to apologize to her.”

Apologize?

A hollow laugh tore from my throat, raw and jagged.

And what about the ninety-nine times I died? The countless days and nights I lived in fear? Who’s going to apologize to me for that?

From outside the door, a soft, delicate voice cut in:

“Julian, please don’t fight with Evelyn because of me…”

Sierra leaned weakly against the doorframe, coughing lightly. “I’m fine.”

Julian spun around and pulled her into his arms.

Those eyes I had kissed countless times-

they held only Sierra now.

“Evelyn, you’ve truly disappointed me,” he said.

I wiped away my tears and turned toward the window, where the sunset bled across the sky.
