The Bride of Endless Deaths novel Chapter 4

Chapter 4

After finalizing the handover at Metropolitan Medical Center, I left the hospital behind. Passing by Sierra Prescott’s ward, I saw it was empty-they were already gone.

The thought of going home to face Julian Blake made my stomach churn. Instead, I decided to hit a bar and stay out all night.

But as I crossed the intersection, a car barreled toward me. The world spun, and darkness swallowed me

whole.

When I opened my eyes, Sierra Prescott stood over me.

Slap!

Her hand cracked across my face, fire blooming in my cheek. Gone was Sierra’s delicate, doll-like act-her features twisted with malice as she fisted a handful of my hair.

“You’re finally awake, you pathetic wretch!” she spat.

Blood filled my mouth. I swallowed it down and glared at her. “What do you want?”

I scanned my surroundings. We were in the hollow carcass of an abandoned construction site, concrete pillars and shadows everywhere. A dozen masked men in black circled us like vultures.

Sierra sneered, her voice dripping venom. “Evelyn Hart, this place must feel familiar, doesn’t it? After all, you’ve died here plenty of times.”

She leaned closer, her words sharp as blades. “You’re so pitiful. Your husband killed you ninety-nine times

–for me.”

I met her gaze without flinching, a cold smile tugging at my lips. “And yet, after ninety-nine lives, you still haven’t convinced Julian to marry you, have you?”

Her face snapped, fury blazing like a cornered wildcat. “You know nothing!” she shrieked. “Julian doesn’t love you anymore. He promised me your heart-literally!”

“Soon, the Lead Character role, your Arcane Pact, and Julian-they’ll all be mine.” Her eyes gleamed with triumph. “Today, I’ll show you who really matters to him.”

Before I could respond, Julian burst through the door, wind whipping in behind him. He was breathless, disheveled, his usual composure shattered.

“Let them go!” he shouted

“Julian, save me!” Sierra walled, her voice trembling with practiced fragility, tears streaking prettily down

her cheeks.

The leader of the masked men pressed a knife to our throats. “Dr. Blake, remember me? If it weren’t for your surgical screw-up, my brother wouldn’t have died from that infection.”

He smirked, savoring the moment. “Drop to the floor and beg, and I’ll let you walk out with one of them.”

Julian’s eyes locked onto us. Sierra sobbed harder, trembling like a leaf in the storm. I stayed cold, refusing

to look at him.

In a single, devastating moment, he made his choice.

His pride broke as he collapsed to the ground, voice raw with desperation. “Please… let Sierra go!”

Watching him degrade himself, I couldn’t help it-I threw back my head and laughed. Julian Blake, the

proudest man I knew, on the floor for another woman.

His eyes reddened with guilt as he looked at me. Holding Sierra tight, he murmured, “Evelyn, you can’t die.

Sierra’s different.”

“Don’t worry,” he added softly. “Once I get Sierra to safety, I’ll come back for you.”

I watched him leave with Sierra clinging to him, her sobs echoing through the hollow building. Even the

thugs around me seemed to pity me.

“The great Mrs. Blake, outshone by some nobody,” one of them mocked.

“Guess that’s what happens when you cross the wrong people,” another sneered.

They shed their jackets, revealing tattoos across their shoulders. My blood ran cold. These weren’t grieving families. They were Ashen Order-the most feared terrorist organization in this world.

For a full day and night, they brutalized me.

Fists crashed into me, electricity ripped through my body, long nails pierced my flesh. They tied me to a chair, humiliating me as dozens of men took turns violating me.

The tearing pain was unbearable at first-I screamed, I fought-but by the end, my heart was ash.

“Arcane Pact,” I rasped through split lips, “where’s Julian right now?”

My Arcane Pact hesitated, its voice heavy with reluctance. [He’s at an amusement park, buying ice cream

with Sierra.]

Of course. He’d already forgotten me, left me here to rot while he played at happiness. Because I couldn’t die, he didn’t care enough to save me.
