The Bride of Endless Deaths novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5

My Arcane Pact projected a live feed before my eyes. Sierra Prescott, licking an ice cream cone, tilted her head and asked, “Julian, don’t you think it’s kinda bad we still haven’t gone to save Evelyn?”

Julian Blake let out a cold scoff. “She cut off your meds. Actions like that come with consequences.’

So he wasn’t ignorant of my suffering-he simply didn’t care.

I shut my eyes, numb, as faceless men replaced each other, one after another.

I had no idea how much time passed before the warehouse’s heavy door finally burst open.

Julian stormed in with a group at his back. He kicked the man off me and pulled me into his arms, clutching me tightly. “Evelyn, I’m sorry. I got here too late.”

For a fleeting second, guilt crossed his eyes as he took in the bruises covering me.

Once, I would’ve clung to the warmth of that embrace. Now, it only filled me with dread and nausea.

I tried to wrench myself free, but the world tilted into darkness, and I passed out.

When I woke again, I had no idea how long I’d been out. Julian was slumped in the chair by my hospital bed, his face drawn and haggard with exhaustion.

I thought maybe-just maybe-seeing me like this would stir something in him. Pity. Regret. Love.

But his first words cut through me like a dull blade.

“Evelyn, the doctors ran a full exam. Your heart’s failing. We have to replace it immediately.”

He didn’t even pause before continuing. “Don’t worry. I’ve already had my Arcane Pact design a state-of-the-art artificial heart. You’ll be fine.”

So this time, Julian couldn’t even wait a month.

A bitter smile curved my lips as I turned my head, dabbing my tears into the pillow.

Oh, Julian Blake. Is it my heart that’s broken-or yours?

I stared up at the ceiling, my voice hoarse as I spoke. “I have one condition. You have to perform the surgery yourself.”

He blinked, surprised at the simplicity of my request, then nodded without hesitation. “Don’t worry, Evelyn. I’ll make sure you come through this.”

I smiled faintly.

Julian… I’m about to die by your hand, and you don’t even realize it.

They wheeled me into the operating room for the transplant.

As they cut my heart from my chest, I felt my soul peel away, drifting high above the body I was leaving

behind.

I watched, cold and detached, as Julian’s face lit with excitement over Sierra’s successful surgery.

Before I left for good, I ordered my Arcane Pact to deliver the video to him.

“Don’t forget the item I exchanged for with Pact’s Power,” I reminded it.

At that moment, a voice echoed in Julian’s mind through his Arcane Pact:

[The Lead Character of the Contracted Realm, Evelyn Hart, confirmed dead.]
