“Lily, I know you don’t like me taking care of Elsa. But she doesn’t have much time left–I can’t just abandon her. I’m willing to overlook the fact that you married James. Divorce him, come back to me, and I’ll give you a proper wedding. As long as you behave and stay by my side, I can help make the charges from this drunk driving case disappear. Lily, come home with me!”
Lily actually laughed out loud.
Sure, once the cooling–off period passed, she would divorce James.
But she’d never pick up that piece of trash again. She would never go back to John.
She didn’t care about his so–called wedding.
Help her out of this mess?
She hadn’t done anything wrong–what was there to fix?
“John, how many times do I have to say it before you get it? I stopped loving you a long time ago. I think you’re dirty, I think you’re disgusting, I think you’re just a used–up secondhand man. I will never go back to you. All I want is for you to stop bothering me and stay out of my life.”
“Lily!”
Hearing her draw the line again–calling him disgusting, a secondhand man–John couldn’t help but shout.
But Lily wasn’t fazed. She stared him down with that same defiant, stubborn glare, and said slowly, clearly, “You’re a secondhand man. You’re disgusting.”
The elders of the Luke family had all heard about Lily and John’s past.
None of them thought highly of John’s two–timing behavior.
Still, they respected Lily. This was her personal matter, and they weren’t going to step in unless she wanted them to.
James found his gaze drifting toward Lily again.
She stood with her chin raised, full of rebellion and fire. Her face was pale, but her eyes were burning with life.
She looked like a sunflower in full bloom, stretching toward the sun.
The sight of her made his heartbeat falter for just a moment.
And when he remembered that she had once poured her heart into marrying John–even sewing the wedding dress herself–his chest tightened with something sharp and bitter.
But she was just the wife he was trying to get rid of. Who she wanted to marry, and who she once made a wedding dress for–it didn’t matter.

“Lily, stop this.”
John didn’t like Lily calling him a secondhand man. It stung.

His face darkened like a storm cloud, but he forced himself to keep calm for fear of losing her. “Once Wendy wakes up, I’ll talk to her and ask her to settle things peacefully. I won’t let you go to prison. Tomorrow, I’ll go with you to finalize the divorce from James. Then come home with me, okay?”
“John…”
Elsa was shaking with rage, her jaw clenched so tightly it ached.
She had to take several deep breaths just to keep her face from twisting in fury.
She thought once John believed Lily had drunk–driven and hurt someone, he’d hate her, send her to prison himself.
She never imagined he’d be asking her mother to forgive Lily–or worse, asking Lily to come back home. Lily was a used–up woman, damaged goods. How could she possibly be worthy?
Elsa lifted her chin with an air of wounded pride, tears spilling one by one. “You want my mom to forgive Lily? My mom is lying in the ICU, covered in blood, barely hanging on to life–and you want forgiveness? Lily did this on purpose! She almost killed her! She tried to take away the woman who gave birth to me, raised me! John, how can you be this cruel to me?”
As she spoke, her body suddenly buckled–she bent over and vomited a mouthful of blood.
“Lizzy!”
Simon’s heart shattered. He rushed forward with a cry.
He turned his fury toward John, voice like a blade. “John, are you out of your mind? Lily committed attempted murder! Look at what she’s done to Lizzy and Wendy, and you still want to protect her? I’m telling you right now–if you stand with Lily, you stand against me. She needs to pay for what she’s done. I’ll make sure she rots in prison!”
John’s expression wavered.
He didn’t want Lily to go to prison.
He wanted to build a future with her–grow old together, raise children.
But Wendy was still in critical condition. If he kept defending Lily, how much more pain and heartbreak would that bring to Elsa?
How could he let her spend her final days suffering even more?
He shut his eyes in anguish. “I’ll make sure Wendy gets the best care. Lily should apologize to both her and Elsa–ask for their forgiveness.”
