Watching Lily and Jackson gaze at each other, so full of emotion, James realized how utterly out of place

he was.

He knew he shouldn’t still be in her hospital room.

But like a man possessed, he couldn’t bring himself to leave.

Clinging to his last shred of presence, he forced a word out. “Lily, I’ll get you some soup.”

Lily’s room was a top–tier VIP suite.

It had a kitchen, a study, massage chair, projector–all the comforts one could need. It wasn’t just a hospital room; it was a place someone could actually live and rest in peace.

Earlier, while James sat at Lily’s bedside, Nancy had sent the family chef over with fresh ingredients, worried she’d wake up hungry.

She’d planned for the chef to stay in the rest area next door, but James had insisted on cooking for Lily himself–wanting to win some favor. Nancy, hoping to help his case, let the chef leave.

The soup had been simmered with Chinese yam. The fragrance of the herbal sweetness mixed with the yam’s light aroma wafted out the moment the lid was lifted–enough to make anyone’s mouth water.

James quickly ladled a bowl and returned to her bedside. “I’ll feed you.”

To Jackson, James was the epitome of a scumbag. No way was he going to let that man feed Lily.

Turning sharply, he raised a brow at James, the defiance in his posture palpable. “I’m here. Why would Lily need you to feed her?”

“James, if you’ve got any sense of shame left, get out of here. Don’t poison her mood.”

James’s heart clenched.

If it weren’t for the guilt–if he hadn’t forced himself on Jackson’s fiancée–he’d have kicked him out the door by now.

Instead, James pulled his gaze away from Jackson, calm and cold. He sat at Lily’s bedside, lifted a spoonful of soup, and ignored him.

Lily had always clung to James–like in the Xander family’s basement, where she’d thrown all caution aside just to hold him tighter.

She still wanted him by her and their baby’s side.

But all he’d ever done was talk about getting rid of that child. He’d hovered over her ho for her to abort. She felt too much pressure.

“James, you’ve got no shame,” Jackson scoffed. “Lily doesn’t need you to feed her. She’ll only drink soup from me.”

Lily had overheard just enough of the call to guess what happened. She urged him anxiously.

Jackson didn’t want to leave her.

But he loved his grandfather deeply and was clearly worried. Lily pushed him again, and he finally stood. “Alright. I’ll head over now. Once Grandpa’s stable, I’ll come back to you.”

Lily urged him once more, and Jackson didn’t delay. He turned and quickly left the room.

“James, there’s no need. I can feed myself.”

James looked like he was about to explode–she figured he didn’t want to feed her, either. He was probably only staying because of pressure from his grandfather.

She reached to take the bowl.

But he didn’t let go. Instead, he said coldly, “Your hand’s injured. Lie back and behave.”
