“She truly has late–stage stomach cancer. If she rests and takes care, she might have up to a year. But if she suffers more injuries or severe emotional shock, at best she has half a year left.”

“What did you say?”

Simon thought he had misheard.

After all, his cousin had shown irrefutable proof that Elsa had been faking illness.

Jared saw his confusion and explained, “She was admitted to our hospital before. I was present when the doctor told her the diagnosis. She was utterly shocked when she heard it.”

“Lily!”

The call stopped her cold as they reached the parking lot.

John’s voice.

He froze when he saw her hand in James’s. His pupils tightened, pain flashing like lightning across his eyes.

He drew a deep breath, forcing himself steady. “You heard it just now. That night when I was drunk–I never touched Elsa. I’m not a rotten cucumber.”

“Lily, I’ve never been with another woman. I only want you. Please–don’t leave me.”

Lily didn’t answer at once. She lifted her eyes, staring at him with frozen indifference.

His gaze burned red, filled with regret and anguish, as though he truly did repent.

But where once her heart might have ached, now she felt only disgust—cold, bitter, unyielding.

At last, she spoke, her voice cutting like ice. “John, do you think that just because sleep with Elsa, you’re innocent? That you’re pure and spotless?”
