“I-” Blanc felt wronged. He went home after work every day; he left the socializing to his sons. He wouldn’t touch any other woman, so how had he been unfaithful? Afraid Nancy might see him as unfaithful, he hurried to explain, “Nancy, after she threw herself at me I pushed her away and left. I didn’t even help her up. I haven’t spoken to her alone since. Nancy believed him.

She’d never imagined Susan, a childhood friend, would make a move on Blanc behind her back. Susan had claimed to be feverish that night–thirty–seven point five–but how high could the car ride have driven her temperature in half an hour? It didn’t add up. It had been deliberate.

“Nancy…” Blanc misread her silence as anger and panicked.

To calm him, Nancy squeezed his hand and said softly, “I believe you. I can tell right from wrong. I’ll be careful—I’ll avoid contact with Susan. James, you be careful too. Yes, Susan helped you for three years and we’re grateful, but if she tries to use that favor to make unreasonable demands, you don’t have to comply.”

When James opened the car door for Lily, he didn’t go to the driver’s seat–he sat beside her in the back and pulled her hard into his arms, kissing her fiercely.

The thought of what might have happened that morning–if she had drunk that bowl and miscarried, or worse–filled him with terror. Even with her beside him he couldn’t calm down. In the hospital ward he’d kept his distance out of respect for the elders; now, alone in the silent parking garage, he wanted to worry her into quiet. He kissed her as if he wanted to bite her lips, to devour her, to keep her safe inside him.
