The Contracted Ever After (Cordelia and Ronan) novel Chapter 716

Three days. Just three days! Or had Blake been dead to you all along? Did you know about the hitman from the start? That he was sent by Samantha? You knew she was coming after Callum, that she wanted to break my heart. So you deliberately called Jayson by the wrong name, making the hitman think he was Callum. And you, you were so scared the hitman had seen Callum's face before, you made Jayson face the counter, his back to the door. That way, the hitman wouldn't see Jayson's face, and he'd get the wrong guy, right?" Cordelia's voice quivered, her whole body trembling.

Damn him, he was a devil incarnate! Not even sparing a child!

Compared to the murderer, he was unspeakably worse!

He had intentionally caused Jayson's death, even more despicable than the hitman.

Ronan flicked his cigarette ash, remaining silent for what felt like an eternity.

"Am I right?" Cordelia shouted, her hysteria hitting a fever pitch.

"Didn't I save Callum, effectively eliminating the threat of the hitman?" He looked at Cordelia, his eyes piercing through her.

Cordelia's head buzzed, and then she crumpled to the floor, tears refusing to come.

She had been 99% certain, clinging to that 1% of doubt. As long as Ronan denied it, she could entertain some fantasy, some sliver of hope. But now, all illusions had shattered.

He was truly more terrifying than any devil!

"But at the cost of Blake's life, that child's life!!" Cordelia roared.

Ronan turned away, speaking indifferently, "What does it matter? I never wanted to adopt him in the first place. Some kids, they never change. His looks said it all. I never liked him."

"What did you say?" Cordelia thought she had misheard. Then it all came flooding back. Every time Callum was in danger, saved by Jayson, Ronan would encourage Jayson, pushing him to keep protecting his brother. From the very start, Ronan had intended to use Jayson. Jayson was Callum's knight, and although Callum and Cordelia saw the boys as equals, Ronan never did. He always harbored thoughts of inequality.

"Tabitha's child, raised by Petra. You think I had any affection for those two women? I had no love for them, so why would I want to adopt their kid? If Petra hadn't met with misfortune, I wouldn't have wanted to adopt, it was just about not refusing Dr. Dustin," Ronan explained.

Cordelia stared at him, suddenly realizing the futility of trying to reason with him. It was like talking to a summer insect about ice, utterly pointless.
