“Excuse me, coming through! Please, let us through!”
A voice rang out abruptly nearby.
Bonnie and Jean looked up in unison, just in time to see a cluster of security guards parting the crowd. In the center strode a middle-aged man radiating power and confidence.
Beside him walked a striking woman, her elegant dress and tailored coat hinting at wealth and refinement. Her beauty was so immaculate, it was impossible to guess her age.
Their arrival was nothing short of dramatic.
Everyone at the airport turned to stare.
Jean gasped. “Oh my God! Are they celebrities? They look so important!”
Bonnie shot Jean a look of sheer exasperation. “Jean, honestly. You really think they’re just celebrities?”
“Then who are they?” Jean pressed, curiosity written all over her face. “Who else would have that kind of entourage at an airport?”
Bonnie rolled her eyes.
Typical. For someone like Jean, the only rich people she could imagine were the ones on TV.
Bonnie leaned in, her voice full of pride. “They’re far more important than any celebrity. That’s Mr. Willis—everyone calls him the king of Neon Spire—and his wife, Lady Kelley. Mr. Willis owns the biggest entertainment company in the city. Every A-list actor and actress works under him. His status? Way above any star.”
She lowered her voice in awe. “Rumor has it he was already a billionaire a decade ago. And Lady Kelley? She’s Pearlhurst’s most famous heiress. Those two together? Absolute power couple. In this part of Neon Spire, only the Richards family even comes close to their level.”
Jean stared, wide-eyed. “Wow, Bonnie, how do you know all this? That’s amazing!”
Bonnie’s eyes sparkled with smug satisfaction. “Because my cousin Fallon is Lady Kelley’s personal assistant. See her? The one carrying Lady Kelley’s purse?”
As she spoke, Bonnie waved energetically at a woman in the crowd. “Cousin!”
This was the Richards family, after all.
The undisputed first family of Neon Spire.
You didn’t just become Lady Kelley’s assistant by sending in a résumé.
It was the first time she’d ever laid eyes on Willis, yet some strange sense of familiarity tugged at her. The feeling was so strong, she couldn’t look away.
A swirl of emotions welled up inside her—feelings too tangled for words.
Bonnie noticed Caitlin’s unwavering stare and gave a derisive snort, her expression dripping with scorn.
Typical. Clearly, Caitlin was hoping to catch the attention of the Richards family.
Shameless.
Utterly shameless.
Did Caitlin really think being pretty was enough to catch the eye of Neon Spire’s royalty? A girl from a tiny village, dreaming of marrying into a dynasty? Not in this lifetime—or the next.
Bonnie narrowed her eyes. Only she had a real connection to the Richards family.
After all, her own cousin was Lady Kelley’s personal assistant.
