Ocean’s Heart belonged to her.
It was the Lowell family’s most precious heirloom.
For Caitlin to do this—it was no different than trampling all over the Lowell name.
There was no way Sally would let Caitlin humiliate them like this.
And, more than that—
If her father ever found out she’d lost Ocean’s Heart, she’d be dead!
Caitlin spoke with calm indifference. “Miss Lowell, you proposed the game, and you set the stakes. Have you forgotten what you said before we even started? If your memory fails you, I’m sure the whole room here can remind you—they were all witnesses.”
As soon as Caitlin finished, the guests immediately chimed in, siding with her. “Miss Gonzales is right. We’re all adults here—you have to accept the consequences of your own bet. Miss Lowell, you’re the Lowell family’s heiress, aren’t you? Surely you’re not going to back out now?”
“Sally, if you can’t handle losing, don’t embarrass yourself!”
“Yeah, Sally, don’t make a scene.”
“Tsk, tsk, who was it that said only cowards go back on their word?”
“So this is what the Lowells are really like—no class at all!”
Sally felt frozen in place, a cold sweat prickling down her back as her face drained of color. She was on the verge of fainting.
Just before the match, everyone had been on her side.
But now—
Every single person had switched to Caitlin’s.
Who even was she?
Sally glared daggers at Caitlin, as if she could burn a hole right through her.
But Caitlin acted as if Sally’s fury didn’t exist. She simply handed Ocean’s Heart to the butler standing nearby. “Take care of this for me.”
“Yes, Miss Freya.”
“Freya, that was brilliant!” Hannah beamed, looping her arm through Caitlin’s. “That’s the kind of spirit we Richards women are known for!”
“Thank you, Grandma.”
Keira followed behind, her eyes sparkling. “Freya, are you hiding any more surprises from your dear old grandmother?”
Caitlin grinned, putting on a show of mystery. “Oh, plenty! You’ll find out in good time.”
After two daughters and two miscarriages, Harlan was their miracle son. His health was everything. Liam wasted no time—he’d ordered his assistant to find the best doctors the moment he got home.
Just then, Mrs. Somerset—Yara—came downstairs and caught the tail end of the conversation. “Why are you contacting heart specialists?” she asked, curiosity piqued.
“Keira and Miss Gonzales didn’t tell you?” Liam looked at her, concern creasing his brow. “Harlan’s having serious heart issues. He needs surgery as soon as possible!”
Yara actually laughed. “They told me, but you don’t need to worry about it—and certainly not about surgery.”
Liam was confused. “But Miss Gonzales said Harlan’s condition was critical. If we wait any longer, the consequences could be disastrous.”
Yara’s eyes flashed with disdain. “Liam, I know you care about Harlan, but do you really trust that Miss Freya from the Gonzales family? She’s divorced, didn’t even finish high school, and you think she knows anything about medicine? She probably just heard about Harlan’s little heart murmur and decided to exaggerate, hoping to win us over.”
After all, Caitlin had only just returned to the Gonzales family and didn’t have a solid footing yet, whereas the Somersets were the Gonzaleses’ top business partners.
Yara went on, “Miss Templeton gave me a prescription for Dr. Nanthea’s Heartsteady Elixir herself. As long as Harlan takes it for fifteen days, he’ll be fine. No need to worry.”
Liam frowned. “Are you sure this Heartsteady Elixir actually works?”
Yara rolled her eyes. “It’s Dr. Nanthea’s personal prescription! Of course it works. It’s priceless—harder to get than gold. Are you really going to trust some nobody over a world-renowned specialist?”
“Fine, do as you see fit. I’m swamped with work lately anyway—Harlan’s care is in your hands.” Liam relented; in their family, Yara always managed the home while he focused on business.
Yara smiled in satisfaction. “Liam, when Harlan’s better, we really have to thank Miss Templeton. If it weren’t for her sharing the Heartsteady Elixir, we might have actually gone through with surgery!”
