She had two sons and a daughter.
Usually, she doted on her daughter as if she were the family’s greatest treasure, hoping that one day her girl would marry Gordon and, through that marriage, support her two brothers.
But now—
Her dream had shattered.
Not only would her daughter be unable to help her brothers in the future, she would become a burden they’d have to carry.
Virgil was just as devastated. He gripped the doctor’s hand, nearly pleading, “Dr. Lowell, please, you have to save my daughter. I’ll pay whatever it takes. She’s so young. If she ever wakes up, she’ll never be able to handle this!”
Raven had always been the one who cared most about her looks.
The doctor shook his head. “When Miss Cartwright was brought in, she’d already lost eye tissue. We did everything we could just to save her life. I hope you understand.”
After Raven was rushed to the hospital, Virgil ordered the housekeeper to search every inch of her room, hoping against hope that maybe—just maybe—they’d find what was missing.
But the housekeeper came back empty-handed.
It was clear: Raven’s eye was gone for good.
The next morning,
News of Raven’s horrific attack—blinded and disfigured in the Ridge Viper’s revenge—spread like wildfire. It was so bizarre and terrifying, it made the front page of the city’s biggest newspaper.
The Prescott family.
Cassidy was sitting in the dining room, enjoying breakfast.
Mrs. Prescott glanced at her daughter’s face, noticing that most of the blemishes had cleared up. She smiled. “I can’t believe how effective Miss Gonzales is. Your skin looks so much better.”
“I know, right?” Cassidy instinctively touched her cheek and looked at her mother. “I told you Freya knew what she was doing, but you wouldn’t believe me.”
Mrs. Prescott took a sip of milk, her expression thoughtful. “I never would’ve guessed that someone who grew up in the countryside would have such skills!”
Compared to the daughters of true old-money families in the city, Caitlin was a total outsider.
In fact, even calling her an outsider was being generous.
And yet—
She kept surprising everyone, shattering their expectations.
Cassidy looked at her mother. “Mom, do you still think Freya isn’t good enough for Jimmy?”
Mrs. Prescott shook her head. “It’s not about that. Jimmy’s never going to marry a divorced woman, and your aunt would never accept a daughter-in-law with that past.”
Caitlin was impressive, sure.
But she had been married before.
Cassidy rolled her eyes at that, exasperated, and decided not to argue. She grabbed the newspaper from the table, sipping her milk as she flipped to the front page.
As soon as she saw the headline, her hand shook so hard that the glass dropped and shattered on the floor.
Crash!
The milk glass exploded into pieces.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Prescott jumped at the sudden noise.
The maid immediately knelt down to clean up the mess.
Mr. Prescott looked up at his daughter, worry etched on his face. “Cassidy, what happened?”
