The Guardian’s Charm was something Celeste had unintentionally yanked from around the stranger’s neck while saving him from the sea.
She’d fully intended to return it once they made it ashore.
But after the exhausting rescue, Celeste had barely managed to cling to a piece of driftwood and paddle to the beach before blacking out completely.
When she finally woke up, it was in a hospital bed.
She asked her family what happened, but they told her that when they found her, she’d been alone—there was no sign of anyone else.
The person she’d pulled from the water had been wearing goggles and a respirator, so Celeste never saw his face. Even if she wanted to find him, she had no clues to start with.
If it weren’t for the Guardian’s Charm still in her possession, she might have wondered if she’d imagined the whole thing after falling into the ocean.
When her mother spoke, Celeste quickly protested, “Mom, don’t throw it away! It belongs to someone else. If I ever get the chance to see him again, I have to give it back.”
“Give it back?” Her mother eyed her, a wry smile on her lips. “March, you didn’t even see what he looked like. How are you going to return it? Besides, who knows if he’s even alive anymore?”
Her parents had been the first to find her.
Celeste had been completely alone when they discovered her.
Yet she insisted she’d brought someone back with her.
Because of that, her mother always thought that the other person must have drowned.
Celeste swore she’d dragged him to shore, but her mother chalked it up to a fear-induced hallucination.
So, to her mother, the Guardian’s Charm felt unlucky—a keepsake from the dead, heavy with some restless spirit.
After all, could someone who drowned possibly die without a grudge?
Her mother figured it was this lingering resentment that caused Celeste’s nightmares.
The more she thought about it, the more unsettled she became. She got up abruptly, went to Celeste’s jewelry box, and snatched up the Guardian’s Charm. “You can’t keep something from the dead! It’s bad luck. I’m throwing it out right now.”
Seeing her mother about to toss it, Celeste hurried over and grabbed the charm back. “Mom, my nightmares have nothing to do with this! Please don’t let your imagination run wild. He’s not dead, I know he’s not!”
Even though she’d been bone-tired and half-conscious after making it to shore, Celeste remembered it vividly—she had really brought him back to land.
And in the last split second before she passed out, she’d seen him move.
“March, let’s say, just for argument’s sake, that he’s still alive,” her mother said, narrowing her eyes. “You nearly died dragging him from the sea, and what did he do? As soon as he woke up, he just took off without even a thank you! Why are you still holding onto his Guardian’s Charm?”
In short, her mother had nothing good to say about the guy.
