THE DIVORCE GAMBIT From Dumped Wife to CEO's Forever novel Chapter 494

Jeanette narrowed her eyes, her voice softening as she lowered it to a whisper. “If you really care about her, you’d better give her an answer soon. Otherwise, no matter what you do, you might not be able to save her life.”

“I stayed here with Katrina all night. Honestly, she seems like she’s given up on the world.”

Given up?

That word made Xavier’s brow furrow, his worry for Katrina deepening. “Can’t you just let me in to see her?”

“No.” Jeanette remained firmly planted in front of the door. “If you stay out here, Katrina and Ann can get through these three days in peace. But if you go in, I doubt Katrina will even have the will to last that long.”

Xavier felt a cold ache settle in his chest.

He had no idea how things had spiraled to this point.

Jeanette studied the shifting expression on his face before continuing. “If you really want Katrina to get better, go buy her a bouquet of flowers and beg her for another chance.”

Another chance?

Xavier took a long, shaky breath. “I’ll do anything for Katrina—except get back together. Can you at least go in and tell her that for me?”

Jeanette rolled her eyes. “Seriously? Just because you’re the golden boy of the Richards family, you think the world owes you? Wake up—Katrina isn’t the one begging here. You are.”

“I’ve given you my advice. Whether Katrina lives or dies now depends entirely on your conscience.” She put extra emphasis on the word “conscience.”

With that, Jeanette slipped inside the hospital room and—

SLAM!

—shut the door behind her, leaving Xavier stranded in the hallway.

The door wasn’t soundproof; inside, Katrina had heard every word the two exchanged.

When Jeanette entered, Katrina immediately sat up in bed. “Well? How’d it go?”

Jeanette flashed an “okay” sign. “You were right, Katrina. Xavier’s got a strong sense of responsibility. You’ve got him right where you want him. I’d bet anything he’s on his way to buy flowers and beg for your forgiveness.”

“Really?” Even though this was just what Katrina had expected, she couldn’t help the surge of excitement that ran through her.

Out in the hallway, Xavier stood rooted to the spot, completely at a loss.

He couldn’t accept a girlfriend like Katrina—not deep down.

But he also couldn’t just stand by and watch her die.

If Katrina, the woman who’d saved his life, actually died because of him, he knew he’d be haunted by guilt for the rest of his days.

So, after agonizing over it, Xavier made his decision. He’d go to the florist, buy flowers, and beg Katrina for forgiveness.

Whatever happened after that, he just needed to make sure she wouldn’t do anything reckless.

Resolved, Xavier left the hospital and headed for the nearest flower shop.
