Jimmy’s expression grew complicated as he got a good look at the girl’s face.
Because—
The girl sitting next to him was just wearing the same dress as Caitlin.
She wasn’t Caitlin at all.
How could this be?
Hadn’t Caitlin come to the airport too?
Was she not on this flight, after all?
How odd.
Jimmy frowned slightly. He’d met plenty of girls before, seen all kinds of tricks, but no matter the situation, he was always the one in control.
But today—
Right now!
He’d stumbled, losing his usual composure. For once, he was no longer the master of the situation.
For someone as competitive as him, that was hard to accept.
Why hadn’t Caitlin chosen the seat next to his? Could Norman Wallace have been right? Had it all been in his head this whole time? Was Caitlin never interested in him to begin with?
Just then, as Jimmy was lost in thought, the girl beside him leaned over and spoke in a sweet voice. “Hi there, would you mind swapping numbers?”
Jimmy offered her a polite smile. “Sorry, my phone’s out of battery.”
His thoughts were too tangled to worry about sparing the girl’s pride, or whether she felt embarrassed.
The girl in the blue dress got the hint immediately, smiled back, and fell silent.
Norman Wallace tugged on Jimmy’s sleeve.
“What?” Jimmy turned his head.
Norman lowered his voice. “Well? Was I right or was I right? Parsons, I never thought I’d see the day you’d get this full of yourself! That day, the girl just happened to buy the same flight and pick the seat next to yours, and you spun it into a whole story in your head.”
He clicked his tongue. “Honestly, man, that’s a little much.”
Jimmy frowned. “It’s not that I’m imagining things. She may not have chosen the seat next to me today, but she definitely booked this flight.”
After all, once Caitlin met him, Cassidy had been pushing for them to get together. If Caitlin had no interest in him, Cassidy wouldn’t have been so eager to play matchmaker.
That’s why, every time Jimmy saw Caitlin, he couldn’t shake the feeling she was deliberately trying to get close to him.
Norman shook his head. “That’s not a sure thing. Maybe she just came to the airport to drop someone off.”
Jimmy thought for a moment. “Last time on the plane, she pretended not to recognize me. Didn’t say a word the whole trip. This time, she’ll come say hello, I’m sure of it.”
If Caitlin really wasn’t interested, she wouldn’t have ignored him the entire flight.
He didn’t believe for a second that she hadn’t recognized him. Even though he’d been wearing a mask when they first met, Cassidy must have shown Caitlin his photo.
So there was no way Caitlin hadn’t recognized him.
“Really?” Norman squinted at him. “I don’t buy that a girl that stunning would just throw herself at you.”
It was Norman’s first time meeting Caitlin, but already he could tell she wasn’t the type to overstep boundaries. On the contrary, she had an air about her that drew people in.
A girl as beautiful and graceful as Caitlin—if she wanted a man, all she’d have to do was crook her finger. Eldermere was full of wealthy bachelors; there was no need for her to waste her time on Jimmy.
Norman continued, “Parsons, admit it. You’ve got a crush, but you’re too proud to say it, so you’re stuck here fantasizing that she’s secretly in love with you.”
