Hartlee ran a hand over his face, grinning. "Thanks to this face of mine, I look like the most honest guy around."
Mirabella glanced at the man sitting across from her. With his deep-set eyes, sharp brows, and features that seemed carved by a sculptor, he had a rugged charm. A fierce tattoo snaked from his neck to just behind his ear. After a moment, she nodded. "Yeah, you do look pretty honest."
In the subtle art of bragging, someone always needs to play the generous card.
Hartlee shifted, dropping the joking tone. "What did you swipe from the base? Are they on your tail?"
Considering Mirabella's recent appearance and Santos' reaction, it wasn't hard to figure out she was the one they were trying to catch.
Hartlee might come off as laid-back, but he had a knack for seeing through things.
"Something?" Mirabella's voice was soft, and she stopped stirring her coffee. "They're looking for something? And it's got something to do with me?"
Seeing her genuine confusion, Hartlee paused, then said, "There's a secret project at the base, been in the works for decades, and they've just kicked it off."
He added, "Can't spill the details, though."
Mirabella's eyes narrowed slightly. She got the hint and gave a small nod. "Got it. Thanks for the heads-up."
"Be careful, alright?" Hartlee advised, then added, "And maybe check your stuff for any trackers."
Mirabella looked at Hartlee, sensing he wasn't just talking off the cuff, and nodded. "Thanks for the tip."
"Anytime."
Hartlee chuckled, taking another sip of his coffee.
Their chat was brief, and soon they went their separate ways.
**After parting with Hartlee, Mirabella didn’t head back to the Davis family.
