Mirabella rubbed her temples and grabbed her phone, logging into The Mirror to shoot Miles a message. If King could be Mr. Maverick, who's to say he couldn't be someone else too? This kind of uncertainty made her wary.
Miles, ever efficient, got back to her in less than two hours with all the info on King and Mr. Maverick. Just as Dylan had said, the findings were spot on.
"It's odd, really. Digging up dirt on King was a breeze. I thought the head honcho at First Base would be a real challenge," Miles said, lounging casually on his chaise, chatting with Mirabella over a voice call.
Mirabella flipped through Mr. Maverick's dossier, also known as Maverick. "It was easy because he wanted you to find it," she concluded after reviewing King's file. Some of it was just too neat, like it was all set up in advance.
"Yeah, I got that vibe too. But the fact that he's also the president of the Archaeological Association adds a twist," Miles mused. Though he didn’t know why Mirabella was so interested in King, he sensed something fishy. "Let me dig a little deeper, see if there’s anything we’ve missed."
"No need," Mirabella said coolly, having gone through all the documents. "There's nothing more to find." Both profiles painted Mr. Maverick as a meticulous and cunning character.
"Fair enough," Miles said, suddenly remembering something. "Didn't you put a bounty out on First Base on the forum last year? Maybe we should splash some cash and take another shot at it?"
The thought made Mirabella recall the billion she’d lost, her face darkening as her tone turned icy. "No money left. I'm hanging up." And with that, she ended the call.
