Jim could feel the urgency in Nellie's voice, so he squeezed her hand tightly. He wasn't sure if he was trying to comfort her or himself. “Don’t worry. If we can reach Mira, it means she’s likely safe for now.”
Nellie glanced up at him, took a deep breath to steady herself, and said, “Let’s go.”
“Yeah.”
Jim didn't dig for more at that moment. They both made their way quickly to the SUV parked at the edge of the tarmac.
But just as they got to the car door, before they could hop in, a silenced bullet whizzed through the air with deadly precision. Jim, whose reflexes were honed to sense danger, felt something was off. He pushed Nellie aside and ducked back just in time.
A sharp clang echoed as the bullet left a dent in the armored car door.
Their team reacted instinctively. They drew their weapons and quickly formed a protective circle around Jim and Nellie, eyes trained on the direction the bullet came from.
In the dim light, a dozen figures in tactical gear emerged. The man leading them didn't need a weapon to project authority; his presence was enough.
Jim narrowed his eyes, his face as calm and cold as ever, not giving away any sign of emotion despite the unexpected appearance of this group.
Nellie, though, spotted the insignia on the leader’s chest and felt a chill. “They’re from the first batch of super assassins,” she whispered.
Jim hadn’t faced these super assassins directly before, but he was well aware of their fearsome reputation.
