Chapter 137
After a weighted pause, Cedrick turned and walked out.
Lucille had anticipated this outcome–a casual test born of impulse. His departure left her strangely calm. When expectations sink to zero, disappointment evaporates.
The caregiver entered, flustered.
Having overheard the conversation by the doorway, she now struggled to meet Lucille’s eyes after witnessing such intimacy.
Lucille remained unperturbed. “Could you assist me with a bath?”
Relieved by the task, the caregiver hurriedly complied.
Post–bath, Lucille returned to bed. Her phone lit up with a message:
Lucille, forgive me. Maricela is irreplaceable. But I vowed never to fail you. That promise stands.
Lucille flung her phone aside. “What nonsense!”
“Mrs. Maynard, what about this? Shall I serve it?”
The caregiver gestured to the paper bag Cedrick had left while tidying the nightstand.
“No.”
“But…” The caregiver glimpsed inside–a strawberry–colored dessert. “It’ll melt if left out.”
She showed Lucille the treat: a famed signature dish–a sphere of cranberry ice cream mash filled with ice cream, cream, and mixed berries.
Tangy and delightful. Exactly Lucille’s preference.
So why deny herself?
“Hand it here.”
No sense in self–punishment.

Meanwhile, Cedrick returned to the restaurant. Maricela blinked in surprise. “Back so soon? How’s Lucille?”
“Took a fall. Minor injuries. She’s fine.”
He sat down, demeanor subdued.
Maricela studied him. “What’s wrong? You look awful. Did you argue?”
Cedrick drank in silence, emptying the glass before him.
“Oh dear, Cedrick,” Maricela chimed in, “that’s my glass you’re drinking from.”
“What’s the big deal? Why be so particular between you and Cedrick?”
Harlan said.
Maricela then told Cedrick, “Cedrick, did you have a fight with Lucille?
She’s hurt right now, don’t give her a hard time! You should be spending time with her!”
“It’s nothing.”
Cedrick said, “There’s a nurse.
“Cedrick, I’m not criticizing you, but!”
Maricela looked anxious, “How can a nurse compare to a husband?
She’s injured, what she needs most now is her husband’s care, you should be by her side!
We can drink any day, can’t we?”
Harlan patted Cedrick’s shoulder, “Maricela, stop talking, don’t I know Lucille?
It must be Lucille who sent Cedrick back!
Maricela, if Lucille were half as sensible as you, our Cedrick wouldn’t be suffering so much.”
David also said to Maricela, “Maricela, stop persuading, don’t be too reasonable, you should fight for what’s yours!
Look at Lucille, fighting for property, fighting for Cedrick’s affection, and you?

Still pushing people away!”
Mentioning property, Maricela was already furious, the gains she had worked hard to get from Cedrick were all taken back by Lucille!
