Chapter 143

In that moment, his emotion was genuine.
Near the corridor leading to private rooms, Maricela and Harlan’s figures flashed past.
“Cedrick’s always had a soft heart,” Harlan remarked. “Even if Lucille falls short as a wife, he cherishes her grand- mother. Almost like he’s making up for losing his own grandma too young.”
“True,” Maricela agreed, though hatred flickered in her eyes. “When I volunteered to help care for his grandmother, he showed that same devotion. Now he treats Lucille’s grandma as his own.”
“You’ve got a kind heart too–why else volunteer at hospitals? Both of you are good people.”
Maricela seemed not to hear him, lost in thought as conflicting emotions crossed her face.
Cedrick remained patient throughout the meal.
He cut Grandma’s steak, shared half her pasta when the main course proved too large, and carefully separated ice cream from her dessert.
Lucille watched him tend to Grandma, feeling somewhat redundant as the granddaughter.
This outing was her idea to show Grandma new experiences–yet he’d taken over!
Bored, she reached her dessert spoon toward the ice cream. Cedrick blocked it.
“You’d better not eat it either,” he said, his gaze sweeping over her head, thinking Grandma might not know, and did- n’t go on.
Lucille thought, that’s right, whether she could eat it or not, she only had a few days left before going out, better be safe, so she reached for the cake beside it with her dessert spoon.
Then, Cedrick finished the ice cream part all by himself.
Lucille glared at him, “I seriously suspect you wanted the ice cream, so you didn’t let us have any!”
Cedrick showed a helpless expression.
Lucille snorted coldly, “I’ve noticed you’ve become much more careful lately. People do need more training.”
Cedrick instantly understood what she meant, and his face darkened.
Exactly, Lucille was saying he was well–trained in front of Maricela.
“I’ll settle this with you later.”
Cedrick said in a joking tone, turning to Grandma, “Grandma, Lucille has been bullying me a lot lately.”

Lucille scoffed, not bothering to respond to his hypocrisy.
After dessert, the dinner ended, and Cedrick wanted to take them home.
Lucille supported Grandma, “No need, you’re very busy, go do your thing.”
“I’m not busy today. Let’s go. It’s hard to get a taxi at this hour.”
Cedrick supported Grandma on the other side.

Lucille helped Grandma sit in the back seat. Cedrick watched her in the rearview mirror, wanting to say something but stopping, and ultimately said nothing, starting the drive to Grandma’s house.
Half an hour later, the car stopped outside Grandma’s yard.
Cedrick got out and helped both of them down.
“Thank you, safe journey.”
Lucille prepared to close the yard gate.
