Chapter 150
The shout snapped Grandma back to reality. If she died, her savings and the country house–worthless as it might be -would go straight to that beast…
The knife clattered to the floor.
Jaxon burst into wild laughter, “Daughter, dear daughter, what a good daughter you are! Let’s see how long you can hold out!”
Lucille’s nails had broken, blood seeping from several fingers. Feeling her grip weakening, she pushed with her head against Tristen in front, shouting, “You’ll have to step over my corpse today! Otherwise, I won’t budge!”
The moment her shout faded, her father shrieked “Ouch!” Then came her brother’s cry, followed by her mother’s. The next instant, arms wrapped around her.
“Who dares step over my wife’s corpse?” A frigid voice cut through the air. “Did they ask me?”
Cedrick had arrived. He seized one of Lucille’s hands. “Who injured my wife’s hand?” His gaze swept across every face in the room. Whoever met his eyes
shrank back.
“You?” Cedrick stared at Jaxon.
“No… no…” Jaxon frantically waved his hands, forcing an ingratiating smile. “Son–in–law’s here…”
“Shut up!” Cedrick’s face remained icy. “I ever called you father–in–law solely because you’re my wife’s biological fa- ther. But a father must first be human. If you choose not to act human? Sorry, I don’t deal with animals.”
The insult stung deeply, especially coming from a junior. Yet Jaxon’s earlier arrogance vanished. Though his face flushed then paled repeatedly, he dared not show anger. He merely fawned before Cedrick. “How could I? Lucille’s my daughter! I cherish her! Parents discipline out of love! Tristen, isn’t that right?”
“Absolutely, brother–in–law! Dad beats me like I’m a jerk’s spawn at home too.” Tristen shed his arrogant heir de- meanor, bowing obsequiously.
Jaxon and Monica: … Whose spawn?
Cedrick didn’t crack a smile. “Whose spawn doesn’t matter. What it became matters less. You enjoy being a jerk? My wife isn’t one!”
Jaxon’s facial muscles twitched violently, yet he suppressed his fury, offering only a stiff smile. “Yes, son–in–law speaks wisely. Lucille’s blessed to have you.”
For Lucille’s Sake
Lucille couldn’t fathom why her family feared Cedrick so much. He was just an ordinary man–no supernatural assas- sin lurking in the shadows.

His only power was wealth.
Some people grovel before the mighty and bully the weak. They puff up around those beneath them but shrink before money and influence.
If her father had dared confront Cedrick with the same aggression he’d shown her and Grandma, Lucille might’ve re- spected him.
After all, her father, brother, and mother combined could physically overpower Cedrick.
Yet they wilted at the sight of him.
Cowards who only prey on the vulnerable.
Utterly despicable!
Cedrick’s arrival shifted the balance entirely.
With one arm around Lucille and the other around Grandma, he became their shield. “Grandma and I are taking Lu- cille to treat her hand. Get out.”
Jaxon and Monica exchanged glances. Jaxon chuckled nervously. “We’ll stay. Guard the house.”
