“Cedrick this, Cedrick that,” Harlan teased, “What about us? No jealousy here?”
“So what?” Maricela hummed. “Cedrick spoils me rotten. Do you?”
“Don’t I?” Harlan retorted playfully. “But seeing how devoted you are to him… his choice today wasn’t wrong. You deserve it.”
“Don’t say that,” Maricela defended Lucille. “Lucille loves Cedrick deeply too. He saved me today–she must be heartbroken. I’ll explain properly later. Cedrick, don’t worry.”
Cedrick reassured, “Relax. Lucille’s always reasonable. She won’t mind.”
“Exactly,” Harlan added. “It’s just a scar. She’s already lame–one more flaw won’t make Cedrick ditch her. He’ll support her forever anyway.”
Lucille stared at her reflection. If not for her clarity, she’d almost believe she was the problem. Why else would Cedrick and his friends talk like this?
What a bunch of birds of a feather!
“Enough,” Maricela chided. “Don’t let Lucille hear this. Girls care about their looks. She’d be crushed.”
“No worries,” Cedrick stated calmly. “I’ve already explained it to her. Lucille isn’t angry. She’s very well–behaved. No need to fret.”
It was rare for Lucille to hear Cedrick praise her, and he’d done it twice now.
Quite remarkable.
“You think she isn’t mad?
Listen, when women say they’re not angry, it’s always the opposite! They’ve already sentenced you to death in their hearts!”
David chimed in at that moment.
Lucille found it amusing; for once David became her spokesperson. She didn’t care about his earlier remarks, but that “sentenced to death” line truly resonated with her.
“Bullshit.”
Cedrick retorted to David, “Ask Lucille yourself if she’s angry then.
Lucille dear, are you done? Everyone’s waiting.”

“Huh?
Lucille’s here already?” Maricela’s voice rang with disbelief.
Lucille dried her hands, emerging from the restroom with a bright smile. “Yep. Just fixed my hair. Crippled leg or not, a girl’s still gotta look good.”
Cough cough cough… Harlan erupted into violent hacking.
“What’s wrong?
Harlan?
Shouldn’t I care about looking good?
Or does it not matter since I’m just a cripple anyway?”
Cough… “No, that’s not what I meant…”
Lucille realized something: when you stopped caring and embraced the madness yourself, others suddenly lost their
nerve.
“Hey Lucille,” Maricela quickly steered the conversation elsewhere, “we were just telling Cedrick about the island trip. Wanna join us?”
Lucille turned her
gaze to Cedrick, lips curved in a knowing half–smile.
Cedrick shifted uncomfortably.
Of course Lucille knew why he squirmed. He’d specifically asked her to accompany Grandma on a trip just before coming to the restaurant.
“Lucille, the island could be nice. What do you think?” Cedrick shot her a look, silently pleading not to make a scene.
“Pass.” Lucille’s smile didn’t waver. “What’s a cripple like me gonna do on an island? Can’t even swim.”
“Lucille…” Cedrick’s brow furrowed, but he kept his tone patient. “Swimming isn’t mandatory.”
“Oh but it is!” Lucille widened her eyes dramatically. “Imagine Maricela and me both drowning. You’d save Maricela, and I’d just sink like a stone, wouldn’t I?”
