Why reject?
Lucille replied: Just woke up. Haven’t washed up.
Cedrick sent another video request.
Glancing around, Lucille noted how fixed preferences were. The bedsheets‘ color and style mirrored their home set. She answered.
The phone hovered close. Adjusting the angle, her face filled the entire screen.
Good sleep lent her cheeks a soft pink glow.
Cedrick took one look and said, “We shared a bed for five years. You think I don’t know how you look waking up un- washed?
Hiding from me?”
Lucille kept her eyes half–shut, silent.
“Why’d you power off?”
She rolled her eyes. “Didn’t want your noise.”
Cedrick fell speechless.
“Still sleepy?
Sleepyhead!”
So abrupt.
Lucille knew couples used odd pet names-“sleepyhead” might be one. But such terms never existed between her and
Cedrick.

Utterly jarring. Goosebumps prickled all over.
“Need more sleep. Hanging up.”
She rushed to end the call.

“Wanted to show you the ocean view…” Cedrick’s expression turned regretful. “Never mind. Sleep. I’ll grab break- fast.”
Lucille instantly terminated the video.
Cedrick set his phone down. A voice sounded behind him: “So you call Lucille ‘sleepyhead‘ normally?”
Maricela approached with two coffee cups, placing one before him.
Cedrick stiffened slightly. “No… She’s just sleeping in.”
“I saw over your shoulder. Lucille’s so lucky.”
Maricela smiled wistfully. “I’d love to wake naturally, someone always covering for me. But…”
Her eyelids lowered.
“Maricela … ”
Maricela shook her head. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to dampen things. Just remembered my years abroad… envying Lu-
cille…”
“Maricela,” Cedrick said firmly, “I meant it–good times shared and hard times borne. Now’s our time to thrive to- gether.”
He used tongs to drop sugar cubes into her coffee. “No more black coffee from now on. Life will always be sweet.”
“Mhm!”
Maricela looked up, eyes glistening with unshed tears. She offered a smile that took all her strength, heartbreaking in its effort. “Cedrick… I saw your video call with Lucille just now. She’s so beautiful. You’ve taken such good care of her. Her skin is flawless. I’m so envious… not like me…” She touched her own face with a bitter smile.
“Maricela !”
Cedrick said firmly, “You are always the most beautiful.”
“Don’t just say that to make me feel better!”
