“Call the police?”
Cedrick snapped, “You casually discard guests‘ valuables and dare threaten to call police?
If you won’t, I will!
Go ahead and call!”
The commotion finally drew the manager over to investigate.
Both parties explained their sides.
Cedrick produced his passport and wedding photos with Lucille from his phone, presenting them as proof they were married and the key was his.
His tone turned steely, “Disposing of guests‘ belongings is unacceptable. This is gross negligence—what if thieves got hold of this key?”
The receptionist countered, “We called the guest. She told us to discard it.”
“Impossible!”
Cedrick shot up from his seat, “This is her house key! Why would she abandon it?
Especially with our photo attached!”
He refused to believe Lucille would discard something so precious–their shared home key with their picture!
This was pure hotel negligence.
The receptionist fumed, “Don’t believe me? I’ll call her right now so you can hear!”
Suddenly Cedrick seized on crucial information–the receptionist knew Lucille’s new number.
“Give me her number. I’ll call her myself.”
The receptionist refused instantly, “Absolutely not!
We can’t disclose guest information.”
“I’m her husband!”
Cedrick roared.
The receptionist’s eyes widened in realization as she pointed accusingly, “Her husband doesn’t know her number?

“I” Nothing Cedrick said registered anymore.
Police arrived and confirmed Cedrick was indeed Lucille’s husband, yet still denied him the key: “How do we know you’re not divorced?”
Cedrick…
Cedrick couldn’t get a word in edgewise. Finally abandoning the key, he pleaded only for the keychain.
“Which city did my wife go to after checkout?”
Cedrick clenched the keychain as he questioned the receptionist.
She rolled her eyes, “Aren’t you her husband?
Husbands don’t know their wives‘ whereabouts?”
Cedrick knew further questioning was futile.
Dusk settled over Canal Town as lights shimmered across St. Mark’s Square where pigeons fluttered around a blonde soprano in red evening gown, her voice soaring with violin accompaniment.
Lucille, Aydan, Linda, and another girl from their tour group were disembarking from a gondola.
As Lucille struggled with her footing, Aydan turned back to help her ashore.
The gondola suddenly rocked, making it even harder for Lucille to keep her balance. Aydan practically hauled her up, and from a certain angle, it looked as if she’d thrown herself into his arms.
Just as Lucille steadied herself, she spotted Cedrick standing in the night.
What was he doing in Magraica?
Cedrick’s brow furrowed as he strode toward her.
Linda and the other girls noticed him too, their expressions shifting.
Aydan finally sensed the tension and turned–only to find a fist flying at his face.
“Have you lost your mind, Maynard?!”
Lucille shoved Aydan aside just as the punch nearly grazed her head.
Cedrick wasn’t done. He lunged after Aydan, determined to land another blow.
Aydan’s temper flared. He cracked his knuckles, snarling, “Maynard! I’ve wanted to deck you for ages!
Bring it on today!”
