But all that was ancient history anyway. She couldn’t care less about Cedrick now.
Just as she tried steering the conversation away, Emma added: Is this Cedrick’s only Instagram post ever?
She then sent a screenshot of Cedrick’s entire Instagram feed–no visibility settings shown, but indeed spotless except for that single post.
Lucille thought, Only post?
He’d just deleted the old ones.
Not that those were anything to be proud of. Best drop it. She brushed it off with
vague words.
Emma noticed her reluctance to discuss Cedrick and tactfully changed subjects, wishing her happy birthday: Just fo- cus on being happy! Everything else can piss off!
Lucille finally smiled, replying with thanks and a virtual hug.
Slept soundly all night.
Early next morning, they prepared to leave Canal Town by boat.
At the dock, everyone bustled about loading luggage onto the vessel.
Lucille couldn’t handle heavy items but always helped move lighter props during relocations, plus managing her own suitcase to avoid burdening the troupe.
As she wheeled her suitcase toward the gangway, a hand took it from her grasp.
Her first thought: Thief!
She nearly screamed until recognizing Cedrick.
Silently, he carried her suitcase straight to the designated luggage area on deck.
Someone tugged Lucille’s sleeve–the backup dancer who’d delivered the gift bag last night.
The girl pointed at Cedrick’s retreating figure, whispering conspiratorially, “Him!
He’s the one who asked me to bring you that!”
Lucille smiled gently. “I know.
Thanks.”
The girl grinned sheepishly. “No need!

Boarding now!”

Cheerfully hauling her own suitcase, she passed Cedrick returning ashore. They exchanged waves before he effort- lessly took her suitcase aboard just as Lucille approached.
Canal Town’s summer mornings offered no breeze, the sun already blazing.
He stood waterside, unusually calm compared to their previous tense encounters.
As Lucille moved to board, he caught her hand.
“Really can’t stand seeing me?
Won’t even talk?”
His gaze remained distant as mist.
She pulled free. “We’re on schedule. Can’t delay everyone.”
Cedrick nodded slowly. “Is this… really how you want things?”
“Hm?”
Lucille didn’t understand what he meant.
“I meant… it’s tough,” she said, “all this running around with no one to carry your suitcase, let alone handle other heavy chores. Do you have to do everything yourself?
Wouldn’t it be better living comfortably by my side?”
So that’s what this was about…
Lucille answered earnestly, “It’s good. This is the life I want. I told you–these past months have been my happiest in five years. I’m not being stubborn, I truly mean it.”
Cedrick smiled, his expression clearing. “I can tell.
So…”
He paused, glancing away. “So I’ll be leaving now. Heading back.”
“Oh, alright!”
Lucille suddenly remembered yesterday’s gift. “Wait–hold on. Let me return that necklace from the boat…”
“No need.”
