Cedrick stood to the side, wanting to help, but he couldn’t seem to find a way to step in.
He didn’t know who this man with Lucille was, where he had come from, or why they had such a good rapport. Lucille had been by his side for five years with no contact with the outside world. How could she have someone so close after just one month away from him?
Lucille’s heart was entirely focused on her grandma. She didn’t even notice him standing there, let alone know he was thinking so much.
After Robert settled Grandma in, she sat down by the hospital bed, gently stroking her grandma’s gaunt, distorted face. She couldn’t hold back her tears anymore, and they streamed down her
cheeks.
“Lucille-”
Cedrick wanted to go to her, hold her, and comfort her. But before he could even say her name, someone else was already by Lucille’s side, putting an arm around her shoulder and wiping her tears. “Lucille, it’s okay. It’s all over now.”
Lucille shook her head, her heart aching. “Grandma has suffered too much…”
“Yes, I know. It breaks my heart too. But look on the bright side, we saved her, right?
We’ll get her the best treatment, and after she’s discharged, we’ll take good care of her. She’ll get better.”
Lucille nodded, sobbing quietly. “I know, but my heart just hurts.”
“I’m guessing you don’t want to go back and rest right now, do you?”
Robert asked in a low voice.
“Yeah.”
Lucille wouldn’t leave her side for a second, no matter who told her to.
“Then you need to pull yourself together, eat properly, and get some rest when you can, or else…”
“I know.”

Lucille frowned. “Grandma could wake up at any moment. I’ll stop crying. I’ll eat later, too. I can’t let her see me looking so worn out when she wakes up.”
Robert chuckled. “Am I annoying you now?”
“No.”
Lucille said in a low voice, “I just feel… like I’m acting like a child.”
She was afraid of being a bother to Robert, who always had to find ways to coax her. Even though she could rely on him now, her deeply ingrained habit was to not trouble others. Her problems were her own.
Guilt and heartache washed over Robert. It was his fault. He hadn’t paid much attention to his family back home. If he’d known there were animals like them around, he would have come and taken her away much sooner.
“Lucille.”
Filled with guilt, he said softly, “With me, you’re just a kid. You can always be a kid.”
Cedrick couldn’t see the expression on Lucille’s face, but those words made him extremely uncomfortable!
If this wasn’t a hospital room, and if Grandma wasn’t lying in the hospital bed, he would have dragged that man out and demanded to know: what gives you the right to say that?
Lucille slowly calmed down with Robert’s reassurance. Now that her grandmother was safe, her frantic mind cleared a little, and she thought to ask Robert, “How did you know where Grandma
was?”
She remembered that when she sent Robert the address, he was already almost there.
Robert’s expression didn’t change, his gaze unwavering, as he kept a calm smile. “I have my ways.”
Just as he said that, Robert’s phone started vibrating.
It was Edwin.
“I’m going to take this call.”
Robert walked out of the hospital room.
Edwin reported that he’d already handled things at the local police station.
