She’d only lost her phone. She hadn’t worn any jewelry or her watch today.
“Call the police!”
Harlan said, instantly furious.
“No!”
Maricela stopped him again. “Don’t… don’t call the police…”
How could she dare call the police?
If they investigated, her secrets would all be exposed!
Facing Harlan’s confused gaze, Maricela lied, “Forget it, Harlan. Just let it go. I had my fortune told recently. They said I was going to lose some money, and that it was ‘Better lose money than health.‘ So let’s just consider this as warding off disaster for me. Besides…”
Maricela glanced at Harlan. “Lucille might be back, did you know?
Old was definitely rescued. Do you have any news on whether she’s dead or alive?”
Harlan was stunned. “When…”
“This afternoon. I have no idea what’s going on with Cedrick now…” Maricela stared at Harlan. “Cedrick cares so much about Old. If he finds out we’re connected to her abuse, what do you think will happen?”
Harlan froze too, but quickly said, “N–No way, right?
We… we just gave Jaxon an address. We were just helping someone out!
Old was so lonely living alone. Her son wanted to take care of her. What’s wrong with us helping him find her?”
“But those Radford people didn’t want to take care of her at all!”
Maricela wondered what was wrong with Harlan today.
What’s the use of saying that to me?
Would Cedrick believe it?
Harlan chuckled. “But how were we supposed to know?
All we knew was that a son was looking for his mother. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Maricela paused, then it dawned on her. “Oh, right!
How were we supposed to know?
That’s the Radfords‘ business!
Nobody told us!
We were just helping!”
Harlan smiled. “Exactly. Cedrick dotes on you so much. No matter what you say, he’ll forgive you whether he believes it or not. What’s there to be afraid of?”
Maricela fell silent.
That might be true, but if that scary man in the black shirt told Cedrick about her past abroad today, Cedrick might not dote on her anymore…
Her eyes turned fierce as she grabbed Harlan’s hand. “Harlan, we need to put another lock on Cedrick, to make sure he’s always on our side.”
Harlan looked at her suspiciously.
