The clerk handed the room key to Cedrick.
Noting her silence, he gave a cold laugh. “Calculating how long I have left? Or planning how to finish me off?”
Lucille: …
Cedrick’s words made the clerk’s hands tremble, dropping the key card onto the counter. The clerk even shot Lucille a meaningful glance.
Lucille looked utterly innocent, meeting the clerk’s eyes: Do I look like a killer?
Cedrick saw right through her thoughts, laughing coldly again. “Stop pretending. You’ve nearly killed me these past
weeks.”
Lucille almost sighed: Cedrick’s perception remained sharp–he instantly saw her petty thoughts, yet remained blind to Maricela’s schemes.
Or chose not to see them?
Cedrick took the key card back from the clerk, his eyes locked on Lucille. “Move.”
“I…” Lucille tried to protest, but suddenly found herself weightless–lifted into his arms again, leaving the clerk gap- ing.
Cedrick carried her straight into the elevator, only setting her down as it ascended.
The elevator mirror reflected his arm wrapped around her waist. She glimpsed it and shoved him hard.
“Such resistance?”
He tightened his grip. “When that dancer held you, twirling you around, you didn’t resist.”
“Cedrick!”
She hated his tone. “Stop acting like some jealous husband!
That’s not your role!”
“Then what is my role?”
Cedrick sneered. “Anyone daring to covet what’s mine meets a bad end!”
“You’re the thing!”
Lucille knew damn well Cedrick wasn’t implying Aydan had designs on her–Aydan never even glanced her way.

Chapter 54
Cedrick’s real beef was Aydan swooping in twice to wreck his deals.
Cedrick loosened his tie, darkness twisting in his eyes. “Soon you’ll learn Cedrick might be a real piece of work!”
The elevator climbed, jerked to a stop at the penthouse. Cedrick grabbed her arm, hauling her out.
He shoved open the presidential suite door, dragging her inside.
“A room this big for just me seems a bit much,”
she remarked.
Cedrick slammed the door. “Who said you’re staying alone?”
“Seriously, Cedrick? Instead of staying with Maricela, you drag me here?”
Lucille scanned the suite, utterly baffled by his intentions.

Cedrick let out a bitter laugh. “Mrs. Maynard, I never knew you were so generous. Had I known earlier, I’d have had ten flings these past five years.”
Kicking off her heels, Lucille stepped barefoot onto the carpet, feigning indifference. “Still not too late to start now.”
Once she resolved to stop loving him, no inner torment could make her relent.
Cedrick frowned at her silhouette–gowned and framed by the floor–to–ceiling window. “Mrs. Maynard, you don’t ac- tually think Aydan’s into you, do you?”
Lucille scoffed. “Filthy minds see filth everywhere.”
“Listen, Lucille,” he said, joining her to gaze at the city lights below. “The wealthy circle is far more complex than you imagine. Life isn’t some Billionaire Romance Novel where CEOs plop down from the sky chanting ‘I love you‘ daily. Our world runs on transactional relationships.‘
The words struck a familiar chord. She chuckled coldly. “So you also believe others must want something from me?
My advanced age?
Or this limp?”
“That’s not what I meant-”
