Brandon gave her a dismissive glance, then caught Theresa in a hug while casually pulling out a chair for Sophia. They sat down together.
Susan and Kent soon joined them, sitting across the table.
Their interaction was so natural that there wasn’t a hint of awkwardness from the earlier teasing. Susan was even excitedly asking Kent to show her pictures of his little fan club, and Kent handed over his phone without a second thought, scrolling through work photos. There wasn't a trace of awkwardness or discomfort.
Sophia couldn’t quite recall what their relationship used to be like, but now it seemed like there was nothing but honesty between them.
“What’s the deal with those two?” she asked Brandon in a whisper, leaning in close.
“Probably just stubborn as a mule,” Brandon replied, loud enough for Susan and Kent to hear.
They glanced up, curiosity piqued, as they were in the middle of discussing Kent’s admirers.
“What’s that you’re saying?” Susan asked, her interest clearly piqued.
“Just some secrets. You guys continue,” Brandon said, passing a menu to Sophia. “See what you’d like to order.”
Susan couldn’t help but comment, “Who whispers a secret for everyone to hear?”
Despite her teasing, she watched Brandon’s attentive gestures as he handed the menu and poured Sophia a drink, feeling a surge of happiness for Sophia’s newfound contentment.
Sophia and Susan were close friends, but it was rare to have dinner with both her and her husband. In the past, Brandon had always been somewhat aloof and preoccupied with work. Sophia never dared to organize such gatherings, worried it might disrupt his busy schedule.
There were rare occasions when Sophia and Susan’s dinner ran late, and Brandon would come by, ending up joining them. But his authoritative presence always transformed their casual meals into something resembling a business meeting, leading to his gradual absence from their gatherings.
Nowadays, Brandon was still a man of few words, but much more down-to-earth. Sophia was more at ease with him now than she had been before.
This dinner was arranged on the spur of the moment. Brandon had partly organized it to get some insight into Sophia’s past with Ivan, but mainly because Sophia had an appointment with President Poe to finalize the science museum design. Brandon didn’t want her to go alone, and bringing Theresa along could be inconvenient.
With Susan and Kent around, they could step away for a while. They chose this mall because President Poe’s meeting was at the restaurant right across the hall.
