Chapter 28 

“Poor Aunty,” Julie sighed, glancing at Kelvin who was now sitting in a corner, mumbling to himself and giggling at the wall. “She took him to every major hospital in the country, tried every treatment she could afford- western, herbal, even spiritual. But nothing changed. He didn’t improve.” 

She paused, her eyes darkening. 

“She isolated herself from everyone, even us. Said it was better that way–less shame, less heartbreak.” 

Jaden’s jaw tightened. His fingers curled into fists at his side. 

He had never liked his aunt’s husband, not even as a child. The man had always looked down on his mother and her side of the family–favoring rich friends, mocking anyone who didn’t wear designer clothes or speak with influence. And now, to hear he abandoned his own child because of a disability? 

Another bastard. Another selfish scumbag like his father. 

The kind that makes you wonder why you even share the same blood. 

Moments later, they reached a small house nestled between tall, rusted fences. The gate squeaked as Julie pushed it open. Weeds had taken over the walkway, and the paint was peeling off the cracked walls. 

“Hello Aunty, look who’s here!” Julie called out cheerfully as they stepped inside. 

The living room was dim, the curtains thin and faded. A faint smell of medicine and ginger tea filled the air. 

Lying on a wooden–framed bed covered in a threadbare blanket was Martha. Her face looked pale and tired, lips dry, but she forced a smile as she raised her head slightly. 

Jaden blinked. The last time he saw her, she was full of life–always talking, always joking. This… this was someone else entirely. 

“Julie,” Martha smiled weakly. “You didn’t tell me you were coming. And who’s this young man? Don’t tell me you’ve already gotten a boyfriend in college?” Her tone was playful, but her eyes narrowed suspiciously. 

“Aunty!” Julie laughed nervously. “No, nothing like that.” 

“Aunty… it’s me,” Jaden stepped forward, voice soft. “It’s Jaden.” 1 

Martha’s eyes widened. Her hand trembled as she tossed the blanket aside and sat up with effort. “J–Jaden? Oh my God… you’ve grown so much. You’re a man now.” 

She reached out and hugged him, tightly. 

“You finally came back. After all these years… we missed you so much, son. You and your sister… I thought I’d never see you both again.” 

“I missed you too, Aunty,” Jaden said as he held her. “I had to go figure out life. Grow. Be someone worthy.” 

After a few minutes, they settled down. Jaden sat near the bed while Julie poured a cup of water.
