The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 38

After an exhausting day at the Covington Group, Ramona finally made it home as dusk was settling in.

Big corporations were never easy to deal with. If she hadn’t done her homework ahead of time, those old men at the shareholders’ meeting would have eaten her alive.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed—a message from Tara, an old friend she hadn’t seen in years. Tara had just returned home and was eager to meet up. She was at a class reunion and begged Ramona to come out for a drink.

Ramona and Tara had been inseparable back in college, sharing a dorm, working part-time jobs together, pulling all-nighters before exams. Their favorite saying was, “If one of us makes it big, don’t forget the other.”

After graduation, Tara had headed overseas to work, while Ramona chose to stay behind, settling down with Jotham and devoting herself to building a life with him.

Ramona tried to decline, but Tara insisted she was only in town for one night and pleaded for a chance to catch up.

Remembering the bond they once shared, Ramona finally agreed.

The reunion was at a music-themed lounge in the city center. When Ramona arrived, the private room was already packed. Tara, sitting off to the side, leapt up the moment she spotted her and swept her into a tight hug.

“Ramona! It’s been forever. I’ve missed you so much!”

Tara’s enthusiasm was infectious, and Ramona couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement herself.

“Tara, you’ve really changed! Looks like life’s been treating you well these past couple of years.”
