The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 45

Jotham was momentarily stunned. He rarely checked his group chats, having muted all the school and class notifications a long time ago.

Before he could finish scrolling through the messages, several old classmates started texting him directly as well.

They all wanted to know: What happened with Ramona?

A spike of anxiety jolted Jotham out of his thoughts. He immediately reached for his phone, intent on calling Ramona.

“She’s fine, I’m sure. If Ramona had time to show up for a reunion but wouldn’t even speak to you, she’s just playing games. For all you know, she stirred this up on purpose, just to make you come running after her.”

Brianna had expected to watch the drama unfold, but the instant Jotham’s first reaction was to reach out to Ramona, her mood soured.

He really cares about her that much?

Her words brought Jotham back to his senses, if only a little. She was right; it was late, and even if he tried to call, Ramona probably wouldn’t answer. It would only make him look desperate.

Their chat thread was still one-sided—Jotham’s messages, and nothing from her.

He’d already bent over backwards for her, even argued with his mother and Eulalia on her behalf, and yet Ramona still refused to compromise. She insisted he hand over shares of the Holt Group, refusing to back down.

The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. He shoved his phone away and said, voice low, “So what exactly happened?”

Brianna, seeing he wasn’t going to chase after Ramona anymore, finally spoke up. “Apparently, Ramona had a falling out with Kiki at the reunion. Kiki posted an apology video, then left the group.”

Brianna had actually tried to contact Kiki herself just now.

Kiki had deleted everyone but left Brianna on her contacts. Even so, Kiki hadn’t replied to any of Brianna’s messages.

“Kiki?” Jotham asked.

“You don’t remember? She was in your class. I tutored her for a while. She’s clever and pretty—though, unfortunately, she was always being compared to Ramona. Maybe she got singled out again at the reunion.”

Brianna’s tone was gentle, but every word was laced with sympathy for Kiki and a veiled jab at Ramona.

Jotham was watching Kiki’s video. She looked shaken, eyes avoiding the camera, her voice trembling. If anything, she seemed more afraid than wronged.

In his memory, Kiki had always been brash and outspoken, not the kind to roll over if someone picked on her.

She’d even pursued him once, and after he turned her down, she’d confronted him in person, cursing him out.

“Maybe she did something to Ramona—something she got caught for? Otherwise, why would she post a video that makes herself look so bad?”

Jotham frowned, thinking aloud.

Brianna snatched her phone back. “She hasn’t even spoken to Ramona in two years! What could she possibly have done? Who posts something like that for no reason? Clearly, she was bullied. I swear, Ramona’s got you completely brainwashed!”

The fact that Jotham still called her “Ramona” in front of Brianna was almost more than she could take.
