The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 95

“Did something happen to him?”

Florence’s words made Ramona instantly anxious.

“They say there was an emergency at the new lithium mine deal, some people got hurt.”

Florence hesitated, unsure if she should continue, but Phineas picked up the thread with a heavy sigh.

“Ethan’s always been so responsible. Now that the entire weight of the Jordon Group is on his shoulders, he never allows himself a moment’s rest. Whenever a crisis hits, he insists on handling it himself. He won’t stop until it’s resolved, no matter how long it takes.”

“If he keeps pushing himself day and night, how can his body possibly take it?” Ramona’s voice trembled with concern.

She remembered Ethan’s recent car accident. Even if it was only minor injuries, he still needed proper rest.

“That’s exactly what worries Phineas and me most,” Florence said, shaking her head, worry etched across her face. “He doesn’t want us to worry, so whenever something happens, he won’t even tell us the details. These past few days, he hasn’t come home at all. We only found out what was going on after asking around.”

Ethan had always been the type to never cause trouble for others, and somehow, that was exactly what made him so worrisome. He handled everything as if he was invincible, as if he could shoulder any burden, except for the simple act of taking care of himself.

If he kept burning the candle at both ends like this, someday he’d run himself into the ground.

Ramona’s face paled, an invisible thread tightening around her heart. She lost all appetite.

He’d been hanging up the phone so quickly lately—she’d just assumed he was too busy to talk. She never imagined something this serious had happened, that he hadn’t even been home. Thinking back, his voice on the phone had sounded off, too—hoarse, strained.

That day of the car accident, he’d brushed her off, saying he just had something to take care of, not wanting her to worry.

Was it the same now? Was he in real trouble, not wanting to drag her into his worries?

Ramona’s heart sank. But not wanting to add to Florence and Phineas’s concerns, she forced herself to smile, praised the meal, and gently steered the conversation elsewhere.

Still, even after dinner, her mind was stuck on Ethan and what he must be going through. Suddenly, the plate in her hand slipped and crashed to the floor, shattering with a loud crack.

The noise jolted Ramona back to the present. She’d been helping the housekeeper carry dishes to the kitchen, only to make a mess.

“Ramona! Are you alright? I told you, you don’t have to help! Did you get hurt? Let me see!”

Florence hurried over, pulling Ramona close and checking her hands for cuts.

“I’m fine,” Ramona said quickly, shaking her head. “Sorry I broke your plate.”
