Sloane couldn’t help but smile. “She sounds like an incredible woman.”
“She was,” Zoey said softly.

“You’d never know it from the way she handled business, but at home she was so gentle with the younger ones.” Her eyes dimmed. “It’s just a shame she never got to have a child of her
own…”
The spoon slipped from Sloane’s fingers, clinking sharply against the rim of the bowl.
“Dr. Rivers? Are you all right?” Zoey asked in concern.
Sloane forced a small smile. “I’m fine, just a little tired.” After a moment’s hesitation, she couldn’t stop herself from asking, “Ms. Beth’s daughter… what happened to her?”
Zoey’s face clouded with sorrow. “That poor child passed not long after birth… it was a terrible blow for Beth. She buried herself in her work after that, until…‘
She suddenly stopped mid–sentence, wiping at the corner of her eyes. “Forgive me–I shouldn’t bring up such sad things.”
Sloane’s heart pounded; she tightened her grip around the spoon, murmuring, “It’s all right…”
“Mrs. Oliver,” she asked quietly, “has there been any news about Ms. Beth?”
Zoey shook her head, tears glimmering in her eyes. “After Beth and her husband disappeared in Ravoth, there’s been no trace of them. Kaizen sent people all over the country to search, but… nothing.” Her voice trembled with worry.
Sloane couldn’t help feeling a wave of unease.
When it came time for the final acupuncture treatment, the entire Oliver family gathered in Jeffrey’s bedroom. The faint scent of herbal medicine filled the air. Sloane’s hands were steady as stone as she twisted the last needle delicately into place.
“All done,” she said quietly, a sheen of sweat glistening on her forehead. Lucas immediately handed her a warm towel, his movements so practiced it was as if he’d done it a hundred
times.
Jeffrey’s eyelids fluttered a few times before slowly opening. His gaze was unfocused at first, blinking uncertainly–until it landed on Sloane.

“Beth…” His voice was raspy and frail, barely more than a whisper. He reached out a trembling hand. “You’re back…”
Kaizen quickly stepped forward and took his father’s hand. “Dad, this is Sloane–Dr. Rivers. She’s the one who saved both you and Shawn.”
It took Jeffrey a while to fully come to his senses, yet his eyes lingered on Sloane’s face, reluctant to look away. “So alike…” he murmured.
“She looks exactly like Beth did when she was young…”
“Dad, how are you feeling?” Kaizen asked gently.
Jeffrey waved a hand, signaling for help to sit up. “Much better. Tell me–what’s been happening while I was out?”
